Dear Brock Turner, I Am Sorry

Brock Turner,

I am sorry. I don't know you personally, and honestly I am so glad that I don't, but I am so terribly sorry. I am sorry that you were not raised to be a decent human being. I am sorry that you were not taught that you can't run away from your mistakes. I am sorry you were taught that Mama and Daddy's money can buy your freedom. I am sorry that you were taught that your athletic abilities automatically buy you a free pass to do as you please. I am sorry that you are the greatest example of rape culture in today's society. I am sorry that you are such a disgusting individual who will be set free despite the fact that you violently sexually assualted a young woman who was unconscious and intoxicated. I am sorry that you thought her impaired judgement was a good enough reason to ruin her for the rest of her life. I am sorry that you have a father who looks at your inexcusable actions as simply "20 minutes of action" that will ruin your precious swimming career.

If there is anything that makes my blood boil more than anything, it's people just like you, Brock Turner.

You are a classic example of why I, without even thinking about it, grab my keys before walking to my car in case someone tries to mess with me. You are the exact reason I don't attend college parties. People like you are the reason girls of all ages are taught from an early age to control what they wear, say, do and the amount they drink because somehow it may allow you to think we're asking for it. You are the reason girls know not to go to the bathroom alone. You are the reason that deep inside every girl's mind, there is that voice telling her to be extra cautious no matter where she goes. You are the exact and perfect reason as to why rape culture is still a thing in America today.

You are the reason that the victim you assaulted will never be able to fully trust a man ever again. You are the reason she will likely fall into a depression because her freedom, her rights and her protection obviously didn't matter enough for you to receive the punishment you so rightfully deserve. You are the reason she will probably never attend a party or enjoy her younger years ever again. You are the reason she'll have panic attacks when a guy walks by her, looks at her, initiates conversation with her, etc. You are the reason that she is broken. You broke her. And for what? To satisfy some sick, twisted, impulse you had? If I were Judge Persky, you wouldn't see the light of day ever again. Your swimming career would be nonexistent, I would have ruined your life just as you so easily ruined hers.

Brock Turner, I am sorry that you are a coward. I am sorry that you are the most disgusting, vile, black-hearted person I have ever seen.

But I am not sorry for wishing nothing but a miserable, despicable life for you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
