The 7 Deadly Sins of College Students

Falling victim to the college norm

While in college you will find yourself in a whirlwind of experiences. You may be a little bad (or a lot...I won't tell your mom). No matter how bad you are, there are "sins" all students commit (I'm no exception to this statement). These sins are often overlooked because they have become the norm in a college lifestyle.

Sloth

Students are known for being notorious procrastinators. Many seem to live by the mantra "why do today what you can put off until tomorrow." I am guilty of putting off my required reading till an hour before class. This often leaves me cramming to know information and never fully absorbing it. The laziness of students often causes them to skip class to get in a few extra hours of sleep. I hear "I'll work hard later" constantly (mostly from myself). Over time the constant laziness catches up to you and you are in way over your head.

Lust

If you're like me you go to a college with a large population of extremely attractive guys. Unlike the boys in high school, these new guys that you meet don't know how awkward you were in high school or what you looked like pre-puberty. You are finally getting noticed and it can be a culture shock. Dating in college is fun (especially since you're broke and not eating in the cafe is nice). I'm guilty of going on endless dates with guys I met on tinder (watch out for Netflix and chill). Eventually, the dates run together and you realize it's more fun to find one special person. So have fun, but limit yourself. Watch out for the guys that are only looking for an easy girl and stick to the gentlemen (they're out there).

Envy

There's nothing wrong with a little competition. Chances are competition landed you where you are today; you worked hard to secure a scholarship or a place at the university you attend. Don't let your need to compete cause you to be envious of others though. Everyone is in college for the same reason, to succeed. Uplift your peers for their achievements instead of tear them down.

Gluttony

The freshman 15 is not a myth. If you live on campus you have countless dining options, the cafe is an all-you-can eat buffet, junk food is cheap, and stress eating is tempting. Before you know it you're squeezing into your clothes and your mom is noticing your weight gain when you visit home. Make it a goal to visit the campus gym (it's a life saver), take the stairs instead of the elevator, and opt for healthier snack options.

Greed

College is without a doubt expensive. Living the life of a broke college student is hard but don't be a greedy person. Be thankful you are able to attend a university and obtain a higher education. Next time there is a fundraiser on campus spare what you can. Donate an extra pack of ramen to the campus food pantry. Split a dang piece of cake with your college bestie! Do what you can to give to others (everyone's got it hard).

Wrath

As a female in college I have plenty of experience with wrath. My roommate once refused to speak to me for an entire month because I asked her to clean her side of the room. Wrath will cause you to say things you'll regret later and you'll definitely feel stupid for getting so mad over something so stupid. Don't let the stress of college get to you and cause you to be a bundle of anger. Don't ruin your friendships because you didn't get your nap.

Pride

Be proud of your hard work, your good test score, or how awesome you did on that paper. Don't be arrogant. There is nothing worse than hearing about how great someone else did on something you failed at. Avoid bragging about your amazing boyfriend to your single friends. Don't turn into an egotistical monster. Be proud of yourself, be proud of your friends, and let them do the same (just make sure neither of you over do it).

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
