It was about 11:30 on a Sunday morning. I was fast asleep after a night of crazy fun (just kidding. I probably didn’t do anything). But yeah, I was awoken by a loud screech coming from my suitemate, Jennie’s room. She ran into my room and I figured she was about to tell my roommate and me that her crush texted her or something cool like that but the words that came out of her mouth were even cooler!
“I’m going to see Wicked!” she screamed.
“What?” I replied with one eye open.
She repeated herself and it caught my attention that time because she said that our other friend, Hakeem, had another extra ticket and we were going to see Wicked on Broadway!
Jennie and I got dressed to the nines because we didn’t know what to expect when going to a Broadway production. We picked Hakeem up at 2:00 and headed over to Cookout to meet up with the people who had our tickets.
The reason we had free tickets to Wicked was because Hakeem’s high school drama teacher had 3 extra tickets and so she was going to meet up with us to give them to us.
When we got to Cookout, I was so shocked to see a school bus outside and that the entire place was full of students wearing the same white t-shirts. In that moment, it all came to me. “WE’RE CRASHING A HIGH SCHOOL FIELD TRIP”, I thought to myself. 3 students must have bailed and not been able to get refunds. Our tickets were paid for by high school kids!
We were actually about to go on a high school field trip again. OH, TO FEEL YOUNG AGAIN. All the kids were super cool and took selfies with me for my Snapchat. We met the drama teacher and I explained how excited I was because I actually played Elphaba in my high school production of Wicked (or so I like to tell people). I was Elphaba in my high school production but my teacher decided to take my part away a week before the show because I wasn’t ready. *Inserts tears all over this article*
After lunch, we were instructed to follow the school bus to Charlotte. That’s not creepy at all.
When we arrived and received our tickets, we noticed the price of the tickets. $90. A high school student paid $90 for me to see Wicked on Broadway for free!
We felt like we were a part of their high school drama club as we took pictures with them on the red carpet (not really a red carpet but there was a movie star backdrop, so we were basically celebrities).
The show was very cool. If you haven’t seen Wicked. It’s a must-see! The amount of work that had to go into putting on this production is crazy. The show had the coolest props and effects and let me just say, the talent was OUT OF THIS WORLD. This show may not have been by the original cast of Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth but they were certainly just as talented! I swear the actress playing Glinda sounded just like Chenoweth!
The show is a spin-off of the Wizard of Oz, but there are so many twists and turns that no one would have predicted. There were so many more details that I saw while watching it that I didn’t catch while I was in it. It was very cool.
The moral of the story is that everyone needs to see Wicked at some point in their life.
