If you know anything about sports, you know they can be time consuming, intense and come in a variety of different formats.
You may also know that many males are often very passionate and full of information about their favorite sports teams or players. Better believe that if you get the chance to date a major sports fan that there will be good and bad times.
Dating a guy who loves sports has truly taught me loyalty, excitement and to enjoy the intense moments. Even though there are sometimes several struggles of dating a big sports fan, it truly has to be one of the biggest blessings ever. There are a few reasons why.
Sports come first.
Whether you have a date night planned or you are trying to make plans, the topic of game times come up. Nothing – I mean nothing – will stop him from watching on of the biggest games. His favorite college basketball team is playing on a nationally televised game at 11 a.m., but he will mention that he also wants to watch several other games in the Big 10 Conference. Lets be real, this will be an all day event. My advice to all girls is to take an interest in one of his favorite sports teams. Be open to watching that morning basketball game but also place the idea that you want to go hiking later on. Just because sports come first in his mind does not mean he is not open to engaging in other activities with you!
The outcome of the game dictates his mood.
Men cry. Its a fact especially when they have a true emotional attachment to their sports teams that win or their favorite players that get traded. They may not show emotion in the ways you always want but letting them show emotion in something that makes them happy will earn you brownie points in the end. Whether it's ripping a paper in half because of frustration or jumping up and down for a big win. Your man's true personality will come out so let him celebrate or be a little bit grumpy but respect the emotions he will exhibit.
Showing interest lights up his world.
Ladies, we all know that we like to be the center of attention. Well, sitting on the couch on your phone huffing and puffing to get his attention will not work (trust me I know first hand). That will just make him annoyed that you are ruining the game that he was super excited to watch. My advice for you is put away the phone, eyes on the screen and start cheering. Showing that you are interested is one of the best gifts that you can give to him and its the cheapest.
Sports do not take a break.
Spring and summer means the end of basketball and start of baseball. Summer and fall means the end of baseball and the beginning of football. Fall and winter is the beginning of hockey and basketball with football still happening. Winter and spring means football ends, hockey and basketball are in its prime states. You guessed it, the vicious cycle repeats itself. Just because basketball ends in April does not mean he will be all yours.
Overall, watching him enjoy his sporting teams and how he idolizes the players is one of my all time favorite things to do. I always make sure to remember that these are the things that made him happy before I came into the picture. A simple game keeps him company when I go out with the girls. A big win makes his day 100% better after a rough day at school. Ladies just because he loves his sports just as much as you does not mean that you are not important. Always look at both sides, throw on his favorite teams jersey, grab a drink and enjoy the passionate journey that sports fans embark with their teams.
