Darkness No More

If you took a moment to stop and think, how many of your friends or family members have been impacted by mental health issues? Or if they have not, how many of their family or friends have been?

Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for college students, ages 18-24.

Every 12.3 minutes, someone in this country will die at their own hands.

But yet, when someone reaches out for help, what do we do? Do we help them? Or do we, as a country and a community, reflect an all-too-common stigma that talking about how you are feeling will only lead to more trouble and judgment?

So many people in this world are hurting and struggling every day to survive, they have nowhere to turn and no one to turn to. College-aged students are at an increased risk due to the added pressure of rigorous degree programs and the social stress they will face on a day to day basis. Without the proper support in place, an end to the stigma surrounding mental illness, lives will continue to be lost. Futures and promising aspirations will continue to die with America's most at-risk population. So what can we do to help?

At my college, St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, we will be holding our first annual "Out of the Darkness Campus Walk" on March 26, 2017, sponsored by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and The Student Nursing Association, in support of people struggling with mental illness and to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Most importantly, however, is the goal of stopping the horrifying stigma surrounding Anxiety, Depression and other mental illness. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hopes to reduce the suicide rate by 20% by the year 2025, however, they cannot do this without the help of the community to raise awareness.

Together we can make a difference in turning lives around so that there will be no more fear. So there will be no more darkness.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
