We all know how easy it is to just put something off until right before it is due. That is the easy way out. I am here to tell you its not the way you should be taking. Sure, adults tell you all the time that promptness and a good work ethic are both essential characteristics in being successful. Some of the most successful people on the planet procrastinated for the first half of their lives thinking that it didn't matter.
But all of those individuals turned over a new leaf at some point. An A average student who is very involved with Greek life and student government at the University of Florida told me: “I do nothing all day every day and it works out fine for me,” in a very non sarcastic and completely serious tone. We all can't be like him though. Sometimes in order to get things done you must start it at least a week before, plan it out, think about what actions to take in order to finish it, then do it and revise it afterwards. If you want to do something right it takes time.
When your boss or teacher asks you to do something, it is usually expected to be started on immediately and done well. In order to get good at this process of being on time and completing quality work, you must take certain steps so your brain is ready. First, make sure you know the directions of the assignment or job that you are supposed to complete. This is obvious but the next few steps could vary depending on the project. Make sure you have gotten a good night's sleep and eaten a healthy breakfast or meal beforehand. Your brain needs to be on its most efficient setting. Moreover, you should be doing these things anyways to stay healthy and be ready for anything.
Before a long period of work, I usually get myself ready by relieving stress. This could be something fun you like to do. For instance, working out helps me relieve stress when I need it. Only you know what you need in order to stay focused and do a good job. If you are not focused, dangerous things can happen. I've seen it before. Distractions are only the beginning of a nightmare involving trying to do work when you are not in the correct state of mind. I've seen people scratch off the skin under their nails from being so stressed because of procrastinating and then cramming before a test.
It's always good to stay productive. The brain goes through an algorithmic process employing all of its neurons to work together as a network to take in and analyze data. So you have to make sure to read about and understand the different ideas and relationships going on in your project or assignment. They don't call it brainstorming for nothing.
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs did not come up with two of the most industrialized and revolutionary software companies in the world without a little brainstorming. I mean come on, how hard could it really be to sit down and write your ideas as well as revise them before getting to work? “You can do anything if you put your mind to it.” How many times have we all heard that before? I personally don't believe that you can accomplish anything you want when you put your mind to it without certain connections, but you can certainly get a lot done. All you have to do is not procrastinate, work hard and put your mind to it.
Although being hardworking is hard and most of us would rather be lazy, procrastination is evil. For instance, back in the medieval times, if you didn't do something that was asked of you by authoritative figures on time and well, then you got your head cut off. Waiting to do something important was not good back then and it's not good now.
