This past June, A teammate of mine competed in the Miss Michigan's Outstanding Teen competition in Muskegon. I have danced with Maria since we were five years old and have shared many memories with her both in and out of the studio. She has been like a sister to me and now we are officially bonded by the teen crown. Other than watching her achieve her dreams on the stage, I have witnessed her put in the work at the studio, in the classroom, and in her heart. I have been very fortunate to have trained with her, but as she was crowned, I realized that the dress did not help her win, the interview prep, or the makeup, for being a competitive dancer has given us the drive to accomplish anything.
1. Dance teaches individuals the importance of consistency
For many dancers, there is always a big event you are training for. Whether its as small as a regional competition or a world championship, students are always putting in the time to perfect their craft to ensure that the performance is the best it can be. being a dancer teaches individuals to be consistent with prating their routines, pushing yourself even when you're tired, and never settling for you are your only limit.
2. The importance of staying positive
Even if you feel that you are the best at what you do, there will always be a time when you do not come out on top. At times, it can be frustrating when someone doesn't believe in your vision or win the championship you have been practicing for all year. Being a dancer has taught me not to worry about the medal you win at the end of the day but worry about doing my best. Nothing is more satisfying than having your best performance and knowing that you did the best you could and enjoyed the moment.
3. How to handle pressure
No matter how stressful a situation can be such as being crowned Miss America or going into the toughest interview to get the job of your dreams, Dance has taught me how to channel this stress and feed off of it. Allowing yourself to trust your body for if you put in the time, your natural instinct will take over. No matter how stressful situation can be, I have learned to step away and enjoy the moment.
4. How to be a team player
Although It doesn't take a team to win a crown, Being a team player has instilled the importance of being grateful and respectful to your competitors. Although at the end there is one winner, everyone put in the same amount of time and deserves the same respect and recognition.
Although there will be a time when we can no longer dance at the same caliber, the life lessons dance has taught us will ever leave and shape the many individuals the art touches!
