It is not easy to pursue a career in the art world, let alone be known for it. We have to worry about making rent and supporting ourselves, just like everyone else, but for us, our work sometimes seems to make it impossible, since art is considered entertainment, in a lot of ways. Art is self-indulgent and personal, but also incredibly necessary.
The following list might seem like an odd blend of artists to list together, varying from painter to musicians, to photographer, but they are all prolific in their field, constantly working on new material and projects. They are persistent, and not for the sake of money, but because this is what keeps them going; their work is a huge part of their lives. These are emerging artists who are doing everything right; they just want to share it.
Kita P.
From Harrisburg, PA, living in Brooklyn.
Check out her website and Bandcamp.
Sophie Xu
From the Bronx, living in Philadelphia.
(I swear I'm not biased--see for yourself, click here for the latest issue!)
She is one of the most diligent people I know, especially as an artist. Sophie has her cake and eats it too.
Baghdad Brook
Brooklyn, New York
Baghdad Brook is another artist who really knows how to control a crowd. He experiments with different styles and techniques through every song, each one differing from the next. Give his intricate, poetic lyrics and jazzy instrumentals a listen. Click here for his Soundcloud.
@Plasticlasagne aka Hannah McHugh
Chicago, Illinois
I'm not sure how or when I became acquainted with @plasticlasgne but I'll give Twitter the credit. From her paintings, zines, and installations, Hannah McHugh trumps all, with her visuals of distinct intensity, which tend to be paired with humor.
My favorite projects of hers are "Summer of Love (Call Your Girlfriend/Tell Her Everything)," and "net.art Is Dead." What are you waiting for? Click here.
