Why You Should Love Your Curly Hair

Why You Should Love Your Curly Hair
Adriana Monge

When I was younger, my hair was definitely one of my biggest insecurities. I would hide my curls by straightening my hair everyday, which only did more harm. I would conform to be like the other girls at my school with sleek, straight hair.

In so many movies you would always see the stereotypical "geeky" girl or guy with really curly hair. A lot of the time when someone is getting a makeover, their hair goes from curly to straight. When I was young I remember seeing all these negative traits associated with curly hair. This made me view curly hair as an "ugly" trait.

People with curly hair are often discouraged, since straight hair is more common. They feel that they have to conform with society and look the same. I think it's important that we stray from this idea. We should strive to be bold and different.

Many people begin to hate their hair because they don't know how to maintain it (and believe me it is a process). It is important to use products that don't have too many drying chemicals such as Sulfates. Also, don't wash your hair everyday! Many people with curly hair tend to have dry hair as well. Washing your hair too much only will make it drier.

Another important tip for those with curly hair is to always condition it. Focus on putting conditioner on the ends of your hair and leave it on for as long as you would like. Coconut oil is your best friend! There are many masks you can do prior to showering that leave your hair soft and filled with moisture.

There are several youtubers who make videos giving tips for people with curly hair. One in particular that is very helpful is CurlyPenny. She will take questions from the comments section and make videos as her response. Her videos definitely helped me feel more confident and inspired to wear my hair naturally.

Curly hair is beautiful and having it allows you to wear two styles rather than just being locked down to one. I regret hiding the great trait I have for so long. I feel like I was hiding part of who I am, my curly hair reminds me of my Puerto Rican and Peruvian heritage.

Many young men and women have this same insecurity and I want them all to know that curly hair is unique and that they should embrace this.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
