In the wake of the election results, I’ve found myself wallowing in self-pity for the last week. I have cried out of anger, I have cried out of sadness. Unfortunately, the results are inescapable. Although I do have a hard time accepting the results so soon following the heartbreak of Secretary Clinton’s defeat, I do wish the media could begin to filter in some other relevant news among the articles packed with talk of policy, scandal, and protest. I don’t know about you, but I am CRAVING some celeb gossip and fun holiday articles filled with recipes and DIY home décor and basically anything but talk of the election. We will have plenty of time to talk politics in the new year, but for right now, I just really want to bask in the glow of string lights and find new ways to cover my apartment in tinsel and make it smell like freshly baked cookies! I really get the feeling that I am not alone, so here are some things you can do this week, discuss with your friends, or even just read about for the next ten minutes. I can promise your mind will thank you for the break from the downhill rollercoaster of the last week.
Go to the midnight premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Bless you, J.K. Rowling for not leaving us for too long. The author that wrote me through my childhood has another film headed for the big screen. This article, written by People Magazine’s Ale Russian, covers an exclusive interview with Rowling and the Fantastic Beasts cast in which she reveals the return of Dumbledore is in the near future. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. According to Russian, the author revealed that it will be a younger Dumbledore, which excites me to no end because I have so many questions that might finally be answered. The film will hit theatres on Friday, November 18 and will surely be a hit, so make sure to reserve your midnight seating ASAP.
Have a HP themed party while you’re at it.
Why not celebrate the premiere with a party full of all of the edible delicacies featured throughout the series? Feel free to pregame with a hearty mug of butterbeer followed by sneaking in some cockroach clusters and pumpkin pasties! They are all so easy to make, definitely a fun thing to do with friends, and a perfect treat to get you in the HP mood (as if we’re all not in that mood all the time already…)
Get a head start on planning your Thanksgiving menu.
There is now less than a week until the feast, which is CRAZY. This autumn is really flying by, it feels like it was just September and now we are already beginning to creep up on December. So as to alleviate some of the holiday stress filling every waking moment in the next few weeks, there are so many wonderful listicles filled with creative, autumnal dishes. They sound absolutely delicious just by first glance at the easily-prepared recipes. Whether you’re looking for more food to fill your dinner table (and your tummy) or if you are feeling like it’s time to jazz up this Thursday night party with a holiday cocktail, there are plenty of recipes and concoctions to fulfill any desire.
DIY holiday décor done right.
Christmas themed décor isn’t hard to find during this time of the year, but it’s rare to find something new and unique when it all starts to look the same. It can also be wicked overpriced. Although all holiday décor is welcome and appreciated in my book, I’ve uncovered some great listicles filled with easy DIY décor that will certainly help you dodge yet another year of repeated (and outdated) decorations spread throughout the house. From elevated garland and wreathes to homemade snow globes, the possibilities are endless. Soon enough your home will be the one to beat once your friends and family get a look at your upscale (and unrepeatable) holiday cheer!
While the election has left so many of us feeling heartbroken and defeated, the holidays and other current events have been forgotten and left behind as the political talk has absolutely saturated every social or informative medium available. Take the next week to relax before the rush of the holiday season takes over the better part of your time for the six weeks following Thanksgiving. Relax and enjoy some time to yourself, as well as much needed creative time spent with friends, making food and watching movies and sharing lots of laughter. Just be kind to all and stand together and it will all work itself out. In the meantime, eat this chocolate soup if you’re really feeling overwhelmed by the holidays and/or the election. It’s an immediate cure, I promise.
