Who knew such commotion could be caused by a holiday cup?

CupGate 2016: Starbucks Holiday Cups
Starbucks

In case you hate coffee or don't read, Starbucks has just released the 2016 holiday cups and people are not happy about it. Instead of having the cups adorned with typical holiday symbols like sleighs, snowflakes, and Santa Clauses, the cups are just ombre red.

Christians everywhere are freaking the hell out. They are outraged that Starbucks would dare eliminate the Christmas spirit from their coffee experience. Some protestors of the cups have decided to boycott the coffee chain or say their name is ”Merry Christmas” when they go to order their drinks.

Last time I checked, Starbucks was not a Christian company like Chick-fil-a or Hobby Lobby. And further more, just because the cups are lacking typical holiday symbols doesn’t mean that the red color doesn’t emulate the joy of the season. Starbucks’ Director of Content and Design release a statement on the scandal saying, “This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories."

Personally, I think that all of this hullabaloo is really just outrageous. If the lack of holiday images on your Starbucks cup is really ruining your holiday spirit, you’re probably a scrooge or someone who feels the need to complain about every single little thing that irks them.

I personally think that this apparent crisis over what Starbucks does or does not put on it’s holiday cups should be a wake-up call for everyone. Instead of sitting behind our computer screens and complaining about the little things that in the end don’t really matter, we should be going out into the world and making a difference. Last time I checked, the spirit of Christmas comes from being surrounded by family and friends at Christmas dinner or decorating your Christmas tree in an ugly Christmas sweater. It comes from helping to make someone else’s day merry and bright instead of focusing on what you want. It’s about being together and enjoying the cheer and love that comes with the holiday season. I hate to break it to you, but Christmas, unfortunately, does not come packaged in a festive coffee cup.

So this holiday season, instead of getting in the spirit of Christmas with a cup of coffee from Starbucks, I challenge you to do something bigger and better. Find a way to serve your local community, like donating food to a food pantry this holiday season so those who are struggling can have a nice Christmas too. You can pay it forward with small acts of kindness, paying for the person behind you in line or being there for a friend who really needs your advice or help. There are millions of little things that you can do in order to make a difference and feel the true spirit of Christmas.

Not only will you have to spend less time at the gym working of your peppermint mocha, but you will also be able to feel the warm, fuzzy feeling from getting into the true Christmas mindset.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
