For centuries, little boys and girls have either made or bought costumes to take part in celebrating the upcoming holiday, Halloween. In the 1950s, some cities decided that trick or treating on Halloween had gotten too crazy and instead created Beggars Night. On this night, people are able to dress up and be someone else for the night.
While most of us enjoy seeing pictures on social media, others find some costume choices to be extremely offense towards their race and culture. I know my statement will receive some eye rolls, comments about how tired people are of concerns about being politically correct, and how people need to stop being so sensitive. The biggest thing I think we all need to remember is that it is not up for us to decide what offends people. If something we say or do offends someone, we need to stop being defensive of our own actions, and instead, put ourselves in their shoes and try and understand why it bothers them.
This Halloween season, let's all walk away from the race and culture based costumes. Let's walk away from the nuns, wearing blackface, or Native American Head Dresses. Instead, when you are shopping for this year's costume, try one of these ideas.
1. Favorite Animal
2. A TV or Book Character
3. Food
Halloween can be so much fun, but let's make sure it is fun and enjoyable for everyone!
