Ever since the release of A New Hope in 1977, the cultural impact of the Star Wars has only been growing. It is commonplace in society. Having used to be in a niche genre predicted to be unsuccessful, Star Wars is now a mainstream staple film that everyone knows about. In fact, you would be considered weird for not knowing where a line such as, “May the force be with you” comes from. The fact that Star Wars has had a major cultural impact is obvious, but how exactly has it done this?

Though George Lucas is heavily criticized for his more recent actions regarding the series, he has affected the film industry more than just about any other filmmaker. There are the more obvious ways, such as the fact that he popularized science fiction as a genre. But Star Wars also made trilogies more common. Current stories such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, or even the more iconic Lord of the Rings are released as three movies. When Star Wars doesn’t impact movie and film via visuals, score, etc. often it is directly parodied. The more notable parodies being the movie Spaceballs, the Family Guy episode “Blue Harvest,” and Hardware Wars. Lucas may have made some detrimental errors in the prequels, but his overall positive impact on film and television cannot be overlooked.

One of the most beautiful things in this world is to experience a different reality through film, television or books. Star Wars has successfully done this with its different stories. Sitting in the theater, you are transported onto the planet of Tatooine or the Death Star. The characters seem real. Watching Princess Leia fight is empowering. Obi-Wan fighting Vader is nerve wracking. Han getting frozen in carbonite is saddening. Only good films can make you feel like the characters are your friends. Star Wars achieves that with ease, making it feel more like you’re along with them on the ride for every adventure. Watching Star Wars is an experience. During your highest highs and lowest low, Star Wars is there.

The fandom created around Star Wars is highly present. From well thought out cosplays to themed bands, they have many ways of expressing their love for the franchise. There is a strong community surrounding the movies. Though this community has sparked many heated controversies, it has also been a bonding force for many people. During the premiere night for Episode VII: The Force Awakens, there was a proposal that occurred because the two considered Star Wars to be a major factor in their relationship. They're definitely not the first two people to have this happen. Many people have found friendships, relationships, and communities through the Star Wars franchise. They have learned valuable lessons from Star Wars.

Because of this, the impact of Star Wars is immeasurable. It goes beyond just the current fans. The morals and themes that Star Wars promotes will continue to be passed through generations, consciously or not. Its impact on film will never diminish. As people go to see Rogue One and the many other Star Wars films that are to be released, it adds to the legacy of Star Wars.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
