Brisk air, falling leaves, and ready-to-wear sweaters seem to change people’s mindset. Fall is here, and so is cuffing season. The hookup culture is real in college, but when the months get colder and our party outfits become sweaters and leggings rather than crop tops and short shorts, it seems that the desire to be tied down increases. But why is that? Is it because it’s cold out and people just want to stay under the covers, and, well, staying under the covers with someone is much more enjoyable than being alone? Or is it because your body is rebounding from all of the craziness you inflicted on it all summer and you just need to take it easy for a while? I don’t know the answer to this, but I think it’s safe to say everyone settles down in their actions in the colder months, whether they’re settling down in a relationship or not.
The weather getting colder definitely gives you less opportunity to do fun things, whether the snow days trap you indoors or the weather is just too cold to bear. Some might say these are the “boring” months, so that’s why they find someone with whom to spice things up. You start going to the movie theater instead of the bar. You start saving money instead of spending it. And you might just get lonely if you don’t find someone to cuff.
You don’t go out as much because your fireplace and bottle of wine are so much more inviting than the icicles awaiting you when you go out your back door. You don’t have the motivation for that morning run when you know you’ll come back with frostbite. And it seems that the crazy desire to be single fades because you know that you’d rather cuddle when it’s cold out instead of gallivanting outside the bar trying to figure out if you’re going to take a cab home alone or with someone.
The changes are clear, but not everyone is ready for it. I’m all for cuffing season. What’s better than finding someone you genuinely enjoy? If you haven’t found someone special enough for that yet, hop aboard the struggle bus because you’ll soon find yourself realizing the following:
Who’s going to get drunk in bed with me when it’s too cold to go out?
Who’s going to warm me up when I get out of the shower in the morning?
Who’s going to get snowed in with me so I don’t die of boredom?
Who’s going to take me to see that new movie when it comes out?
Who’s going to binge-watch Netflix with me?
Who will bring me soup if I catch a cold?
Who will cuddle with me?
Who will make sure I get home okay when the road is icy?
The list goes on, and if you don’t find someone good, it looks like you’ll be doing those things alone unless you have fellow single roommates, like I do. In that case, you’ll embrace the season and all of its wine-filled nights spent binge-watching "Grey's Anatomy" or "Sons of Anarchy." If not, happy cuffing!
