Today, animal testing has started to become less and less common among competing makeup brands. Although many drugstore cosmetics brands still use animals to test their products, there are many high quality brands arising to combat those companies that still use animal testing. These cruelty free brands offer high quality products that are not tested on animals and won’t break the bank.
At the moment, companies like Maybelline, Revlon, Dove, MAC and L’OREAL do still test their products on animals. These are just a few common drugstore names and they are not, by any means, the sole culprits of cruelty. Although these are common brands and affordable for most people, the fact that their products are tested on innocent animals should make you rethink your purchase of any products from brands like those.
The following list consists of some common cruelty free brands. It goes in order from least expensive to most expensive as far as the average prices of their products go. This list is a helpful tool for figuring out which brands you should support in the fight to end animal testing in the cosmetics industry:
Wet n Wild
Wet n Wild is probably one of the least expensive cruelty free drugstore brands you will find on the market today. They offer products such as eyeshadows (around $1 a piece), eyeliner pencils ($3), and much much more.
NYX
NYX is an amazing drugstore brand that is both inexpensive and cruelty-free. Their products range from lip color (around $3) to foundation ($10) and everything in between. This brand is especially nice because you can find it in stores like Target and Walmart so it is easy to find.
ELF
ELF is one of my absolute favorite brands. Their products are super high quality and generally all very low in cost. They offer different types of makeup brushes (the “cheaper” versions are $1 each and the more “high quality” version of the $1 brushes cost around $3 a piece). Aside from their beauty tools, ELF offers a wide range of products including primer, lip stain, mascara, and more that are all around $10 or less.
Almay
Almay is a common drugstore brand that most people would normally group in with the companies that DO test on animals, but it stands apart from its similar brands. Almay offers products like colorful eyeshadow palettes (around $7 a piece) at most drugstores.
Burt’s Bees
Burt’s Bees is a company most famous for its beeswax chapstick. They offer mainly lip products (for around $3 or $4 a piece) but also a few other products including makeup remover face wipes (around $8).
Hard Candy
Hard Candy is a brand I’ve seen exclusively at Walmart (although it is probably available in other stores as well). It offers colorful packaging and high-quality products still for an affordable cost. One of their popular products is their liquid highlighter which costs about $9.
BH Cosmetics
BH Cosmetics is an online company that offers beautiful makeup and makeup tools. They usually have some sort of sale going on at all times for their products, but eye shadow palette prices range anywhere from $6-$30 depending on the size of the item and the current sale going on.
OPI
OPI is a company that mainly focusses on high-quality nail products. They offer both mini and full-size versions of many of their products and the polishes can also be purchased in limited edition sets at various times throughout the year. Prices range anywhere from $4-$12 for a bottle, depending on which store they are purchased at. OPI products are available at different convenience stores like Meijer and Walmart.
Physicians Formula
Physicians Formula can be found at stores like Walmart but is a little more expensive than brands like NYX or ELF. They offer products like foundation (about $13 each) and eyeshadow palettes (about $14 each). The design of their products as well as the quality is incredibly nice and well worth the slight price increase from some of the cheaper priced brands on the list.
Lush
Lush is one of my all time favorite companies on the planet. They are most commonly known for their colorful bath bombs (which vary in price anywhere from $4.99 to about $12) but they also offer products like body washes, body scrubs, lip products, lotions, and even some makeup products. This company offers products that are definitely more expensive than the average brand and are only available in a Lush store (or online on their website), but you definitely get amazing products for the prices you pay for them.
Too Faced Cosmetics
Too Faced Cosmetics is most commonly known for the food-themed (and scented) eyeshadow palettes. Their most popular palette is the chocolate themed palette which goes for around $49. They offer every type of makeup from eyes to lips to skin and it’s all incredibly pigmented and well worth the higher prices. This brand is offered in stores like Sephora and can also be found on their website, toofaced.com.
Urban Decay
Urban Decay is another brand known most commonly for their eyeshadow palettes. The “Naked” palette line. These palettes are gorgeous and are very pigmented but also more glitter-accented than the cheaper brands on the list. The most popular palette, Naked 2, retails for about $54. Urban Decay can be found in stores like Sephora and Ulta as well as on the Urban Decay website.
Smashbox Cosmetics
Smaxhbox Cosmetics offer a wide range of lip, face, and eye products as well as accessories. One of their most popular products is their face primer which is about $39 a tube. This brand is more expensive but again, definitely worth it for the quality.
These are just a few of the incredible brands out there that offer amazing products that are not tested on animals. In the fight to end animal testing and animal cruelty, you can help by supporting brands like these and pulling away from brands that do still test their products on animals. Every person (and every purchase) can help make a difference.
