I remember the first thing I've ever written. I was sitting in my room and I decided I wanted to write a story. I was seven years old, my room was warm, and it was raining outside. I was bored and so I wanted to write a story that would change my life dramatically. To make my story interesting and more appealing to the eye, I decided it was important to incorporate some pictures. I knew I wanted to be both the author and the illustrator.
I began my draft with the pictures because I already knew what I wanted to write about. I wanted each page to have a tree and a sun and a house sitting on a hill. My story was gonna take place outside on Strawberry Hill. The day was perfect and the sun was shining so I didn't have to worry about mudslides and unnecessary wind. After drawing the tree, the sun, house, and hill, I had six completed pages with the cover page, so that was seven pages (not front and back). The title of my story I saved for last, just like the titles of songs I've written.
Page 1: "Once upon a time, there was a girl who lived below Strawberry Hill by herself, with no friends who wanted to play with her".
Page 2: "The girl will always go outside after breakfast and play in the grass until she got tired".
Page 3: "One day when she was outside playing, clouds began to form, and it began to rain on her parade".
Page 4: "The girl was very sad and had to go inside because she didn't want to get sick. After she cleaned up, the girl went to her room and looked out the window. Bored, the girl decided she was going to write a story because she wanted to remember this feeling".
Page 5: "After the girl wrote her story, she felt better and the rain began to clear up, so the girl got dressed and put on her favorite red rain boots to go play in the puddles".
Page 6: "The girl was happy that the rain brought her something else to do instead of playing in the grass outside. The girl was happy when other people began to join her. The girl was happy because she was finally having fun with other people outside".
"The Rain Made The Girl Happy," was the first thing I ever wrote and every time I am feeling hopeless and I have writer's block, I always go back to this story, it has been with me for fifteen years. When I was seven years old I didn't know that I would develop a passion for writing. I thank nature for raining that day because creative writing has been the ingredient that made strong and resourceful when getting my thoughts down on paper. I thank the younger me every chance I get.
