After all the frustration and stress of moving in and unpacking comes an even more onerous task of decorating. Making a dorm room feel like home can be quite tricky, especially when heavy things wont stay up with command strips. Here are some ways you can make your little space feel like a getaway.
1. Get a rug
Soften the acoustics of the room by covering some of the harder surfaces like floors and walls with fabric. The rug will absorb sound making it less likely to echo, so it feels more like a bedroom and less like a cave.
2. Grow a plant
Bring a little life to your room and grow a plant. Succulents are easy to take care of and only require watering every one to two weeks; or order a terrarium like this one from Kohl's, all the pieces are included, minus the water and sunlight.
3. Print some pictures
Make sure to cover some of the white space on your walls with some pictures from home. Friendly faces and good memories will help to bring cinderblock walls a little bit more to life.
4. Plug-in some lights
Bring some of your own lighting to replace some of the harsh dorm lighting. The soft glow from fairy lights will make watching Netflix in bed much cozier. I'm using these lights from Amazon to add a soft glow.
5. Accessorize with pillows
Make your bed more of a haven with an abundance of throw pillows. Make your bed look like something straight out of a pottery barn catalog by adding accent pillows. Swapping them out is also a good way to update decor without breaking the bank.
6. Magnetize your fridge
Fill every bit of blank space with some decoration, whether functional or not. Etsy is loaded with cute decorative magnets and has something to suit anyones tastes. This magnetized notepad is cute and practical.
7. Bring fun books
Pack some books other than textbooks and notebooks to bring in more personality to your desk. Some books from your personal collection will take away some of the drab from the pile of papers on your desk.
8. Create extra seating
Bring an ottoman, floor pillows or a fold up chair to create some seating for friends. Extra space for people to hang out will make the room more inviting and comfortable for people to spend time and enjoy themselves. This ottoman from Target is making an appearance in my dorm room this year.
9. Get festive for holidays
Decorating for the seasons makes all the difference in the world. Even decorations from the dollar store can spruce up a room temporarily and get you in the holiday spirit, whatever spirit that may be.
10. Store in style
Make sure even your storage has a decorative purpose. Buy cute patterned storage or decorate with fabric paint or washi tape. Bed Bath and Beyond has an adorable line of organizational bins for their college line.
11. Create a cover
Hide away in a DIY bed canopy. Perfect for a little bit of privacy or just a touch of style. All it takes is a king size sheet and a hula hoop according to this Amazon Student Video.
12. Pack stuffed animals
Something soft and comforting from home will help you to bring a little of the comfort of your bedroom at home with you. Pillow pets are convenient and easy to pack, but make all the difference in comfort.
