Apparently it's time to grow up. It seems everyone and their mom has an internship this summer, and it's a big accomplishment for us all! *patting myself on the back* But what happens when we actually get there?? I have a feeling that most of us were never taught more than to keep our elbows off the table and say “yes/no ma'am/sir" or “excuse me". So, I write to you this week about etiquette, mainly because I need to learn it myself, but also in hopes that it will help disguise the fact that we have no idea what we're doing!
1. If you have to blow your nose, don't look down at the aftermath in the tissue. I promise you, there is no treasure.
2. Respond to the RSVP. Even if you decline, it's more polite than flat out ignoring it.
3. Reply to that “important" text when you're not with someone. Text messages were made to be answered at your convenience, not immediately. After all, if it's that important, they'll call you.
4. When you're treated to a cool event, a concert for example, refrain from videotaping the whole thing.
5. Some say to monitor what you post of Facebook, especially if you friend coworkers. Well, I would even go as far to say don't even friend your coworkers. Do you really want them to know what you do outside of work?
6. Keep your hands to yourself. It's invasive and you never know the last time that person showered or if they wash their hands after using the restroom.
7. Guys, shave your face. Girls, shave your legs.
8. Gas is a nasty bodily function. Handle it in the restroom as you would #1 or #2.
9. When asked to pass the salt, pass the salt AND the pepper. It's awkward to ask in the first place; don't make the poor guy ask again.
10. Most importantly, always be on time, especially if you're the new guy!
When it comes down to it, etiquette is simply thinking of others first. So just for three months, clean yourself up and put yourself last. Good luck!
