It's always amazing to see how various artists interpret the songs of their peers when taking on covers.
Ed Sheeran - "Trap Queen"
We all clearly identify with Fetty Wap and his riveting interlude, “Trap Queen.” Apparently, so does Ed Sheeran, enough so that he took on the song, delivering it in his own acoustic style. The unlikely pairing of artist and song choice makes this cover all the more charming, and demonstrates the versatility of both Sheeran and his music.
Ericka Guitron - "Like I’m Gonna Lose You"
The original by Meghan Trainor features John Legend, which is enough to make the song a hit. Guitron takes on the duet but adds strings, slowing down the song, and making an effort to show off her amazing talent.
Louisa Wendorff - "Blank Space/Style"
This cover is the perfect blend of two of Taylor Swift’s recent radio hits off of her newest album, “1989.” Any cover that strays from the original in a creative way as this one does, deserves a round of applause. I’m no “Swiftie,” but this cover was bomb.
Tori Kelly - "Thinking Out Loud"
If you haven’t heard of Tori Kelly by now, you’re missing out. She has been growing in popularity for nearly two years now, and is well on her way to becoming a staple in music today. Kelly has a knack for putting her own twists on popular music and has graced the public with countless covers including Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin’ Bout You” back in 2012, and Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” in 2013. In this cover, she kills the vocals on Ed Sheeran’s romantic love song “Thinking Out Loud.”
Sam Smith - "How Will I Know"
This cover is almost a year old, but still so, so good. Whitney Houston’s hits have been butchered many times, but powerhouse Smith rose to the occasion and did “How Will I Know” justice. In due time, Smith’s name will be mentioned alongside legends such as Houston, for his incredible talent.
Ella Eyre - "We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off"
In my opinion, Eyre is severely underrated. Her unique vocal skills are showcased perfectly in this rendition of Jermaine Stewart’s classic, “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off.” Eyre slows down the formerly upbeat song, applying a twist that makes the cover hard to resist replaying time and time again. The British beauty’s talent can be heard in her own music (which I highly recommend giving a listen to), in addition to in collaborative pieces with Rudimental and Bastille.
