Counting My Blessings

Because it is so easy to overlook the simple blessings of every day life.

Counting My Blessings

When life seems like it’s blowing past you, 90 to nothing, it can sometimes be tough to stop and realize just how blessed you are. When the main things on your mind consist of the test (or four) that you have next week, that assignment you need to turn in, that boy/girl who didn’t text you back, what you’re going to wear to that party, and numerous other possibilities, you don’t really see the joy in the little things. It’s so cliché, but it’s so true— there is infinite joy to be found in the little things in life. Taking pleasure in insignificant moments reminds you just how blessed you are. Recently, I have had a few major reminders of just how blessed I am and I hope you, too, can realize how blessed you are.

Parents

I know that, sometimes, our parents can be the most annoying people ever— always wanting to know who we’re texting or Snapchatting, how our grades are, whether or not we went to class. Do we really realize just how much they do for us? In most cases, parents are the first people to step up when we need, or maybe even just want, something. In the past week, I came to the awesome realization of how much my parents do for me. It’s not that I wasn’t thankful when I was growing up; I just didn’t get it. Being away and having to fend for myself has opened my eyes. When Mom sends you a message, saying, “Bought you a cute shirt today,” Dad texts you something completely random, or when he responds to your completely random questions, we should see the joy in that! They may seem like such trivial things, but, when I think about the fact that, one day, they won’t be here anymore, I remember just how important they are to me.

Friends

How often do we take our friends for granted? How often do we get annoyed with such little things, rather than seeing how much they really love us? Whether it's your best friend from home or your best friend in college, they are all blessings in disguise. Without them, who would you call at midnight when you feel like your heart is broken and you just want to talk? Who would you party with on Saturday nights? Who would you send your most random texts and Snaps to? Most importantly, who would give you the reality checks that you so often find yourself needing? We don’t want to hear that that girl/guy is not good for us. We don’t want to hear that we should probably study, instead of going out. Thank God for best friends telling you that. I have been blessed with such good people in my life, whether they be my best friends or just acquaintances. Always remember how important they are, even when you just want to cry because you have three tests in the same day, one paper due, and you haven’t had a real meal in probably two days.

Life

If you’re reading this, then you are obviously alive. Do you ever stop and see how awesome that is? You are on Earth for a reason and that reason is probably not to stress about school, what to wear, or where you’re going. So often, we take the little things, like being able to walk to class, drive to the store, or even sleep in a warm bed at night for granted. When we stop in the midst of the crazy world around us and just take a look around, we see how beautiful our world is. Everyone has a purpose, whether they have discovered it yet or not.

So, take a second today to thank your parents and your friends. Take a minute to look around at how great life is. If we don’t stop and find the joy in the little things, before we know it, everything will have passed us by and we will realize that we should have taken that moment to enjoy everything life had to offer us.

Smile! You are blessed!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
