It's often said that the past is the past, and you should let it go and move on because it doesn't do anything for you here in the present. But if I could, I would love to write a letter to myself at 15 or 16 years old — that age where every girl starts to really grow up and dream of bigger things and experiences the (seemingly) never-ending vicious cycle of high school drama.
If I could write a letter to me, it would go a little something like this.
Dear young and naive me:
I know things are tough these days, and it feels like you're never going to make it out of this town alive. But trust me, you've got so many great things up ahead. Enjoy being with that boy, but don't make him your entire world. As Christina Yang would say, "He may be dreamy, but he is not the sun. You are." Your friends are always going to be there for you, but one day he may not be — don't choose him over your friends. With that being said, it's OK to make some time for yourself too.
Yes, Geometry and American History may be awful, but do your homework and GET OFF OF YOUR PHONE AND STUDY. School is more important than those pictures being posted on Instagram. Also, stop falling asleep in Biology. It may not always be the most exciting subject, but your teacher is rad and cares about you more than you realize — and you'll be glad you paid attention as a sophomore once you get into AP Biology.
Stop fighting with Mom and Dad. Yeah, their logic may not make sense now, but you are only a kid. They're just trying to do what's best for you, and one day you'll look back and realize that. Don't lie to them — they always find out, and it will just make things worse than if you had told the truth. I know it may not always seem like they're doing all they can to make sure you're OK, but they're working their butts off. You have a roof over your head, clothes and all kinds of food because of them. Say thanks once in a while. You're going to miss them when you have to leave for college.
Work your butt off in sports. You have so much potential and you don't even realize it. You're not going to achieve your dreams if you don't give 110 percent — STOP MAKING EXCUSES. Push yourself; you'll be glad you did.
Go to the football games and cheer on your classmates with your friends. There's nothing like spending time with people outside of school, and you'll make some pretty cool memories — even if it's 40 degrees outside.
Call Ma and Grandpa at least once a week. They live 1,700 miles away from you, and they're not getting any younger. They're not going to be around forever, so spend as much time with them as you can.
I know at 16 years old, it's hard to see past Friday night. But don't worry — these years are fun, but they're nowhere near the best years you'll have in your life. You'll make new friends, and you've got so much going for you. Have a little faith, and you'll see.
I'll see you in the mirror someday.
Love,
Me
