10 Cool Reads For The 28% Of Americans Who Haven't Read A Book In A Year
Erin Powe

I'm a bit of a nerd, I am. And I've created, below, a list of 10 books that could enrich your life if you read them, I hope.

Did you know 28% of Americans did not read a book last year? I think that's a shame. Books give us perspective, give us stories and wisdom. Maybe some people don't read because they don't know what would be worth their time.

This list goes out to youse.

1. "Love Does" by Bob Goff

My eyes were so opened to how Jesus calls us to act and how these acts of love naturally flow out of the love he pours into us! It's such an interesting read too. He has some great stories.

2. "True Grit" Charles Portis

One of the most hilarious and entertaining adventures that I have ever read. It's about a girl, a horse, a scoundrel.. most of you have watched the movie. The book is funnier.

3. "Home Behind the Sun" by Timothy Willard

Great for opening understanding of how wonder and a new perspective can color our daily lives. How knowing God can light every moment with brilliance.

4. "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott

Always a good read that makes me feel so so happy. Jo is the best.

5. "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voskamp

Every breath, every meal, the sparrows outside the window, a baby's laugh is a gift. Ann shows us that gratitude to God leads to joy.

6. "Dietrich Bonhoeffer" by Eric Metaxas

An inspiring biography of one of the heroes of the age.

7. "The Ball and Cross" by G.K. Chesterton

Fantastic. Fiction.

8. "At the Back of the North Wind" by George MacDonald

It's a kid's book, but really it's not. It'll have you longing for heaven in no time flat.

9. "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis

This one is kind of a supposal by Lewis that entertains the idea that hell is locked from the inside. And the faults of the characters made me take a second look at some of my motives. Excellent book.

10. "Daring to Hope" by Katie Davis Majors

Inspiring won't cover it. Katie records her journey to trust God in and with the pain that comes along with mission work in Uganda and raising a large family.

There are books about walking with Jesus and plain old fun books and a mix of both!

Reading one genre is pretty dull so you should take a look at these if you find yourself with time on your hands during break! I came away from them inspired, encouraged, and convicted as well as entertained. Also, if you're into poetry, Gerard Manley Hopkins is a good read.

The End.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
