Skye Williams is known around Morgan State University as "Cookie Girl,” but she’s making herself known everywhere.
Skye, senior, works with her mom, Monica Williams, on the cookie business, From Momma’s Kitchen, and takes her cookies everywhere she goes. Last year they got a chance to have their cookies be on TV for the world to see. During the week of September 27 through October 3, Williams's cookies aired on a bump (mini advertisement) on Adult Swim. Skye was able to get her cookies on TV from visiting an Adult Swim drive-in and giving out some of her cookies after seeing an advertisement Adult Swim aired asking for cookies. After the first airing of the bump, she received a text in a group chat of someone saying that they saw her cookies on Adult Swim.
"This is the biggest thing that's happened to us," said Skye. "We never would've been able to pay this much to get on TV this way."
From Momma’s Kitchen was originally started by Monica and Skye acts as the chief operating officer (COO) of the company. The company blossomed around the time that Monica lost her job. From Momma’s Kitchen had their first vending event in 2011, where they made 400 samples and ran out in to hours.
But Monica isn’t all about cookies, she somehow manages yet another job. William’s mother is also a DJ, taking on about three to four gigs a week.
“She bakes all week and parties all weekend,” said Skye.
Skye started helping her mom with the company when it began about five years ago and the cookie business just stuck.
“It [the business] is something that I’m really proud of," said Skye. "I'm proud of the fact that we're on TV."
The company sells their baked goods at different events. For Mother’s Day they sold their treats at the Maryland Film Festival. Last Sunday Skye spent 10 hours in the kitchen helping her mom bake about 1200 cookies for an order. Their cookies are both online at frommommaskitchen.com and at the Crab Cake Cafe at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland (their key lime cookies are a must in my opinion). And contrary to popular belief, Skye is no business major, she actually studies screenwriting and animations here at Morgan State.
After graduation Skye is planning on moving to Atlanta, Georgia and may move the cookie business with her.
"I'm going to get where I need to get and the cookies are going to get there too," said Skye. "To me the cookies are their own entity."
