In college, you meet people who study business, science, engineering and other subjects that take the same kind of mindset. They know exactly what they’re doing. Then there are some of us who study slightly different majors, and for various reasons, it’s confusing as hell to some people. Talking about your major is a big icebreaker, except when it goes like this:

“What are you studying?”

I’m a rhetoric and writing major.

“Wait, really? That’s…cool.”

Sure.

“Do you write a lot?”

Uh…ya? That kind of comes with being a writing major.

“What else do you do?”

Take other classes? Eat. Nap.

“I mean like, what classes do you take?”

I take writing classes. If you’re a stats major, don’t you take stats?

“Right, so what can you do with that?”

A lot actually: publishing, editing, freelance writing, technical writing, journalism, screenwriting, directing, law school...

“Ohh. So you want to be a teacher?”

Wait...what? Did I not just...huh?

"Your major seems really confusing...but you can edit my essays!"
