It all started when I went on to the sixth grade. Of course during those times, everyone’s body seemed to be changing; and to me, mine had changed for the worst. Compared to other girls in my class, I thought I looked hideous. I had acne, was athletic, and my clothes did not compare to the cute trendy outfits many of the others wore. I know now that none of that really matters, since it has nothing to do with a person’s true character. However, during that time all I could think about was that fact that I was not as pretty as my classmates.
That’s when I hit a low point. I stopped speaking up in class to answer questions, began wearing baggy clothes to hide my body, and gave up almost all of my self-confidence. However, that was also the year I joined the marching band, and a year later, the softball team. If it was not for these two things, I am not sure how long it would have taken for me to begin accepting myself. It was then that I realized that I had talents and skills that set me apart from everyone else. Although it still took me years after to understand and feel confident in myself, I believe I should share three simple things I did to find confidence in myself.
Don’t compare yourself to others
The moment we get old enough to realize who were are, we start to compare ourselves to others. We compare hair, material items, and lives, just to name a few. Chances are, we will grow to envy and desire them to the point that we wish to be like them. But everyone was made differently with diverse talents, so you should embrace yours and not try to be like someone else; because you will never be truly happy.
Take time to find yourself
This step is imperative. You cannot find out your talents or skills if you are busy looking at others and admiring their lives. The moment you stop doing this, you will no doubt become more excited to get out of bed in the morning. I am still working on this step, though I believe we constantly learn more about ourselves each day. I literally had to take a break from social media and magazines in order to figure out what I wanted from life, and love my body.
Love Yourself
It is really just that simple. No matter what people tell you, you will always be in a state of self-consciousness if you never fully accept yourself. By that I mean physically and mentally. If you eat unhealthy, change your diet to better care for your body. If you are good at drawing, use it to your advantage, and continue doing it regardless of how many times people tell you to stop. It took me years to accomplish this, and I still have my moments every now and then. But in all honesty, I love my body because it allows me to do things many others cannot, and that is the beauty of the human race.
