Macklemore definitely had the right idea when it comes to thrift shops, and there’s more in them than grandpa’s old jacket and worn out moccasins. Here are just a few of my insights into the world of thrift shopping.
1. You can never have too much flannel.
Flannels go with everything. Dresses, t-shirts, leggings, jeans, even sweatpants. Plus they’re super cozy and warm. When you can buy them for $4 at a thrift shop, there’s no excuse not to have one. I pride myself in my collection of flannels.
2. Always go straight to the men’s section.
Seriously. Not only are the flannels 10 times more comfortable and usually better quality, there are also tons of big sweaters perfect for a lazy day.
3. Purses!
Thrift shops literally have so many purses. Half of the time they aren’t that cute or nice, but when you get lucky, you get really lucky. Always check the purse section. Same goes for jackets.
4.You’ll never shop somewhere expensive again.
Ok, this is not entirely true. I spend my fare share at Urban Outfitters and Madewell, but there’s nothing like four shirts for $10 to balance the budget.
5. Halloween costumes.
Goodwill is the go-to place for accessories for the perfect Halloweekend party costume.
6. Random junk isn’t junk.
The amount of cool glassware and picture frames you can find at thrift shops is amazing. Perfect dorm room decorations to make yourself look artsy, am I right?
7. The closer to a big city, the better.
It’s pretty self-explanatory, thrift shops get their donations from locals, and there’s definitely going to be better selection at a thrift shop in Boston than in a small rural town. Given the choice, drive the extra mile.
8. Wash everything.
Just do it.
