When I first came to college I had no intention of joining Greek Life. I wanted to focus on my studies and didn't think joining a sorority was the right decision for me. When it came time for Sorority recruitment I went to my first event and instantly fell in love with what would soon be the sorority I called my own. The moment I got my bid from Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority I referred to everyone as my sister, and posted a bunch on social media about how much I love them.“This is my sister” became a common phrase when I introduced other girls in my sorority to my friends. I realized I had joined a group of women who empower others to reach their full potential. I found a group of young ladies who I love unconditionally with my whole heart, just like I would love like my own family members.
We share a beautiful ritual and it is one whose values and moral I try to live by on a daily basis. We volunteer together, hold meetings together, go out
together, study together, eat together, we have sleepovers, we shop together, we take classes together, and we
hang out between classes together. We are a group
of women who have come to the understanding that there is no need to compete among each other. There is only a need to build each other up, support one another, and give each other strength.
I feel sorry for girls who feel no need to go Greek. I know Greek life isn't for everyone and that's totally okay but for me joining a sorority has been one of the best and most rewarding things I have done for myself. I feel sorry for girls who feel no need to better themselves in this way, because joining a sorority has been the best thing I have ever done for myself.
Is my sorority expensive? Absolutely. But do I pay for my friends? If I do, I do not pay enough.
We pay our dues in order to hold formals, sisterhood events, order t-shirts to wear on homecoming and on bid day, give gifts to our new members, buy things needed for our ritual, to support our philanthropy, have a place to hold meetings and workshops, to enable our sisters to travel to leadership seminars and conventions, to hold formal recruitment, and more. We pay to have fun together and to grow as leaders together.
I pay to do things with my sisters, but my sisters themselves are priceless. My sorority has made me a better individual and I have grown exponentially as a result. My sisters lift me up when I have fallen and help me to my feet when I find myself drowning in the murkiest of waters. One of our sorority's mottos is "In order to receive much one must give much." The more time I have devoted to my sorority, the more my sorority has given to me. Sigma Sigma Sigma has become my home away from home and the time I spend with sisters is priceless.
Greek life might not be for everyone, but for me it has become everything. I am forever grateful for the bonds of sisterhood I share with my sisters. I wouldn't have nothing if I didn't have you, my lovely sisters. It is an absolute privilege to share my letters with you and I hope you all know how much you mean to me. My hope for you is that you continue to lift others up and build upon eachother's strengths. May you find beauty in each other and help one another soar to greater heights. You each are so unique and special and the sky is your limit.
Always be willing to help another sister out and do what you can to make a positive difference in the lives of others. You alone have the power to influence someone's day for the better simply by being yourself. Never forget how special you are. I'm honored to have joined a sisterhood which prides itself upon moving ever forward and remaining faithful unto death. Sigma Sigma Sigma you have given me so much and I hope you continue to share your beautiful gifts with all who wear your letters proudly across their chest.
