Eating Is A Hobby, Not A Necessity

I'm not sure why Foodaholics Anonymous is not a thing.

Eating Is A Hobby, Not A Necessity

Hi, hello. I am addicted to food. I admit it. I have a problem, I am fully aware. But how can you NOT be distracted by the cute café you’re walking past, or almost trip over yourself as you stare at the beautifully scooped ice cream cone passing by you in a little kid’s fist? I don’t understand. If you don’t have these problems, allow me to explain what exactly is going through the Foodie’s mind on a daily basis that you may not realize.

1. We do not approach food as a way to just get some nutrients and energy, it is a beautiful art form

Avocado toast with scrambled eggs from Bareburger Ridgefield.

If you have the time, money and energy to have a good meal (or snack or dessert, etc) – DO IT. Why live life mundanely when you can embrace another opportunity to be spectacular?

2. Key Component of Why I Love Food #1: The taste, duh

Kinder helado from Kalia in Madrid.

I think everyone in the world can agree that food should taste good. But true foodies are really particular about their flavors. If we eat something that did not really taste that good or wasn’t satisfying, it will most likely put us in a bad mood until our next meal. Having a bad meal is kind of like being betrayed by your best friend, and we may need some time to blow off some steam. (Sorry to those around who I may take my frustration out on considering I can’t really verbally or physically attack the inanimate food that is already in my stomach.)

3. Key Component of Why I Love Food #2: AESTHETICS

Seared scallops from BOA Santa Monica.

Like all other art forms, the aesthetics of food are very important (almost equally as important as taste). Seriously, presentation is everything. If I’m being completely honest, how the food is served can make me want it, even if I don’t even like whatever is on the plate. Also, this is why a lot of us are also really drawn to desserts. Desserts are just automatically beautiful.

4. It’s really hard to not eat everything in sight

Merengue from Mercado de San Miguel.

I may have just eaten lunch, but wow that sandwich looks really good. You may have to hold me back. Also, just because my dinner is amazing does not mean I am not jealous of yours. Additionally, I may have said I am full but I will have to try REALLY hard to stop eating if the plate is still in front of me so just take it away for my own good. Shoutout to the waiters, best friends and my family who are good at swooping in and stopping me from total self-destruction.

5. It probably runs in the family.

Stuffed french toast and egg pizza from Russell Tavern House.

My mother is a foodie, and I’ve pretty much come to be this way because of her. She taught me to always use pretty dishes to serve food, have a variety of colors on your plate, and how to pick a cute location to enjoy your prized culinary experiences. Most foodies are destined to have this title from birth because it’s a family trait. We were born this way, baby, and we are #sorrynotsorry about it.

Peace, love, and keep on embracing your foodaholic.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
