Ugh. I said it. I said the A-word. Not "asshole". Atheist.
An atheist is a person who doesn't believe in a god.
I am an atheist.
I'm sorry to disappoint some people, but that's they way I've been for awhile.
Now that the truth is out there, let me tell the world a couple of things:
1. I really don't like saying that I'm an atheist because of the negative connotation that it has, so I usually just stick with, "I don't have a religion".
2. Not every atheist is a jerk. But yes, I know a lot of atheists that are, and I apologize for that.
3. If an atheist is a jerk, and tells you that believing in God is stupid, go ahead and be a jerk to them. Atheists should still respect people who believe in something.
4. That being said, don't tell atheists that they're wrong. We should all respect each other. We hear that we're wrong enough times already.
5. Please don't try and make me feel bad when you ask me "where do people go when they die?" because I would like to think that they're in a better place, but since I'm not dead, I don't really know where people go after they pass away. We'll all find out eventually.
6. Religious services make me feel uncomfortable. So if you're a friend and invite me to a church AND I magically end up going, just know that I probably did that because I respect you.
7. "But the Bible says..." will get you nowhere with me. I will not accept that in any type of argument/debate/fight.
8. When people ask me why I'm an atheist, I always say, "I lost faith", and can't really explain how. It happened a long time ago when I was attending a Catholic school. It just happened and I don't really know how to explain it. Please stop asking why I lost faith, because I'll probably just laugh nervously and maybe start sweating. It's not cute.
9. Yes, I still celebrate Christmas. Yes, I know it's JC's birthday. I JUST LOVE EXCHANGING GIFTS (and I also celebrate Three Kings Day, a very popular holiday in Puerto Rico).
10. Want to talk about religion with me? Go ahead! I'll listen to you. I won't have anything to say about it, but I can be a good listener. Just don't expect me to suddenly believe in what you believe in. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
I hope that my friends and family who did not know this about me will still love me and accept me for who I am: a girl who is obsessed with The Beatles, chicken, and cake. I love you all even if you believe in God, Santa Claus, or Beetlejuice.
