It was toward the end of my junior year when I first heard Chrome Sparks. I was in the backseat of my friend’s car while we were on our way to spend yet another night at Miami’s Wynwood Art Walk when I was blessed with Chrome’s most well known hit, “Marijuana."
Released in 2012, Chrome Sparks’ “Marijuana” has become an underground stoner anthem that unsurprisingly escalated to number one the on music blog aggregator, Hype Machine. As the solo project of Brooklyn transfer Jeremy Malvin, Chrome Sparks has since been signed by the notable independent record label of Sydney based label Future Classic (which had signed artists like Flume, Chet Faker and Flight Facilities).
I was finally able to hear Chrome Sparks perform his magic live as he played in the Ybor’s hole-in-the-wall venue Crowbar as he graced the audience with the euphoric echoing sounds of his anthemic beats. Skillfully building up to a heavenly drop of the main beat for every track, Chrome enveloped the crowd with a deep and enticing energy. Standing front and center, my friends and I would occasionally exchange glances of exhilaration as we felt each and everyone of our synapses respond to the tingling oscillations of the sonically pleasing sounds. On the verge of being some kind of spiritual experience, I can honestly say Chrome Sparks performed above and beyond, as expected.
"FADER" magazine has described his music as, "form-shifting beats [that] seem to resonate with spaced-out chillers and hyperactive party kids alike."
