Companies For A Cause

There are more important things than making a profit.

In such a materialistic world, we can so easily become obsessed with making money and buying things. Inherently, that isn't bad, but it so often becomes our main motivation in life. With so many problems in our world, there should be more important things than making a profit. Thankfully, more and more companies are beginning to realize this. It's inspiring to see a company base their goals and mission on giving rather than taking. There are many companies out there that give back, but these eight companies stood out to me in what they stand for and what they're trying to do in the world.

1. Serengetee

Serengetee focuses on supporting people in need worldwide. This company sells pocket tees, headwear, accessories, bags and items for your room. They purchase the fabric from over 25 countries, supporting those local artisans and donating 10 percent of their profits to various grassroots causes in those communities.

2. Yoobi

This company sells various vibrant, colorful school supplies. With every product purchased, an item will be donated to a classroom pack. Once the pack is full, Yoobi works with the Kids in Need Foundation to find a classroom in the U.S. that is in need. Available at Target and online, Yoobi focuses on providing supplies and support so that all children may succeed.

3. 1 Face

1 Face revolves around the idea that one person can change the world. They sell various watches, supporting nine causes: cancer, hunger, breast cancer, clean water, disaster relief, environment, AIDS, education and animal rights. Along with each watch, 1 Face shows what the money goes to and/or how much money will be donated. 1 Face has helped 1,315,179 people and changed their lives.

4. Love Your Melon

This company benefits children with cancer by selling caps, shirts, accessories and their most popular product, beanies. The original platform began as a buy one, give one program, providing hats to children battling cancer in America. They currently have 45,000 hats reserved, and now donate 50 percent of the net proceeds on every product sold to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch.

5. This Bar Saves Lives

You may have seen this granola bar in Target or Whole Food stores. For every bar that is purchased, a life-saving packet of food is sent where it is needed most. This company's goal is to combat severe acute malnutrition by providing both prevention and treatment options for people who are in need. Since June 2013, 657,573 packets have been donated.

6. The Elephant Pants

Combining fashion and a good cause, The Elephant Pants sell harem pants, shorts, leggings, shirts, bags and more! With each purchase, $1 or $2 are donated to the African Wildlife Foundation, specifically keeping saving the elephants in mind. Thus far, this company has donated $190,564 to AWF.

7. Simbi

Simbi sells bracelets, headbands and clothing, partnering with Aqua Haiti to provide clean water to those in the Port-Au-Prince area. This company provides jobs for people in Haiti and enough funds to purify one gallon of water per day with each purchase. Simbi has been able to purify over 10 million gallons of water and reduce cholera in the Port-Au-Prince region from 80 cases per day to five.

8. Sevenly

Sevenly creates seven-day cause campaigns, promoting a different charity each week and creating unique Cause Art apparel to raise funding for them by giving either $7 or 7 percent of the proceeds back to that charity. All of other products purchased will have 7 percent donated to the featured charity or a previous charity promoted by Sevenly. Sevenly has raised $4,441171 and helped 1,586,100 people.

There are so many other companies with goals similar to these, and all of their missions are admirable and inspiring. But not only are these companies showing how important it is to give back; the buyers are, too. We decide where our money and support goes. These companies allow us to purchase the things we need, want or would be buying anyway while simultaneously supporting causes that weigh on our hearts and can help our brothers and sisters across the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
