The 10 Commandments Of Sorority Life
Amanda L Clarke

So you’re in a sorority?

People have probably asked a billion different times why you pay for your friends or why you joined some sort of cult.

Truth is, if they aren’t in it, they aren’t ever going to understand the sorority lifestyle or bond of sisterhood.

There are connections you’re building for your future. There are friendships and memories you’re making that are going to last a lifetime. There is a support system for all the rough times in college and a place to call your home away from home.

Are you friends with all 150 girls in the chapter all the time? No way. But every girl in that room has common interest and shares the same values as you. And you love them for it.

When you’re Greek, you make a promise to your sisters to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. You promise to always grow and better yourself and the sorority.

These commandments, though some sound stereotypical, are all true if you’re Greek.

1. I will always wear my letters proudly. Whether it be by letter shirt, t-shirt, or in the form of the 30,000 stickers I have all over my car and laptop, you better believe I'm proud to be in my sorority.

2. I will love my little, big, twin and whole family with my whole heart. No matter how annoyed I may be that I am practically laying on the ground in family stacking pictures, I will always love you all.

3. I will always defend my sisters and my sorority if I have to. No matter who is fighting with whom, these girls are my sisters and you stick up for family.

4. I will always study and keep my GPA up. Do I want to spend my free time in the library? Not really. But I want to be able to go to formal with my sisters, so I study. We don’t just have themed fun events all the time; we also have studying to do and grades to maintain too. Our degree is why we’re in college, after all. Our sisters just encourage us to maintain where we want to be.

5. I will always have multiple backup themes at the ready. It sounds cheesy but backup plans are pretty important. Whether it’s for Greek Shows, Bid Days, Mixers and more, my Pinterest is always ready and waiting with backup ideas.

6. I will always have a white dress (or two) for all initiations and other functions. Seriously. I have like four different white dresses now. Everyone needs one. It's just a must.

7. I will always know places to get things monogrammed, stitched or screen printed. Because is it really Big/Little reveal if you aren’t all wearing matching shirts? I think not.

8. I will always have extra paint and glitter. Always. Again. Back up plans are important. It may sound weird but you never know that you’ll need it until props get ruined or there’s a Big/Little crafting emergency. Paint and glitter are essentials.

9. I will always love my sisters. Even if someone stole the clever Instagram caption I was going to use, I still love you all. Sisters before everything else.

10. I will always be striving to make my sorority the best it can be. The whole point of joining something bigger than yourself is to leave the organization better off than when you joined it and being a better person then you were when you joined. It’s so important to take the time in college to grow as a person and having 150+ girls helping you grow is a pretty great thing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
