I don't think that there is anything more frustrating than hearing, "Oh you're a comm major? How easy are your classes?" Actually, tiny brained human, they require just as much work as yours. Sure, I'm not trying to find the value of x when someone drops a penny out of a plane flying at 1400 feet, but that doesn't make me any less competent than you are. Everyone picks their major for different reasons. Maybe you want to be an engineer because that's what your dad does. Maybe you want to be an elementary school teacher because you love little kids. Whatever your reason may be, it's all up to you. Maybe I am a bit biased but in my eyes, communications majors are the best kinds of people.
1. The creativity behind every comm major is uncanny.
They always have such bright and unique ideas. It's intriguing to hear what they're thinking about. You're always eager to hear what they are going to come up with next.
2. They're so incredibly personable.
They often love to listen and hear more about you. Your stories and your ideals are important to them. They make you feel so much better about things.
3. They picked their major because it's truly what they want to do.
It's easy to lose sight of the things you love when you're wrapped up in the stressful college life but to comm majors, class doesn't seem like a chore. It's almost exciting.
4. Money is not their first priority.
They know that it's not going to be the easiest task to find a job later on in life. When you love what you do, that's the most important thing.
5. They are all about helping each other out.
Being good at what you do is one thing, but having a support team behind you makes it so much better. That's why broadcast majors need a cohost and why writers need editors. They all go hand in hand.
6. Their classes aren't a struggle.
Going to class and learning about the layout of a newspaper, the background of public relations firm, the story behind a film-- these things aren't useless to a comm major. They're actually so interesting.
7. Professors feel more like friends or mentors.
Because there are so many branches of communications, the same professors seem to specialize in the same areas. They are continually showing up on your schedule and this gives comm majors a chance to build awesome relationships with their profs.
8. They are genuinely good, happy people.
You know when you meet a comm major, they're going to make you feel better about yourself. They have chosen this career path because they believe in themselves and want to make a difference someday. Whether it be through a photo, a television commerical, a great experience, an article-- they just want to be heard.
While all students would argue that they have the best major in the world, I will always stick to my statement by saying that comm students really shine. No matter what it is you choose to do with the rest of your life, the most important parts are that you love it, and you do it well.
