USD is a unique university for many reasons. As USD students, we are presented with opportunities and privileges unheard of at other schools. Most notably, we have a study abroad-focused culture. We are fortunate enough to have scholarships transfer over, and an incredibly accommodating study abroad department that wants everyone to have the opportunity to experience a new culture. For one reason or another, not everyone takes advantage of these opportunities the same semester as you, or even at all. With that, there should be an unspoken code between the students on how to act when you’re back from abroad.
1. We know it was amazing
And we are happy for you
2. We know you clubbed every night until 3 am
We saw the snapchats
3. We know you know how to actually pronounce caprese
And know the difference between a cappuccino and a latte
4. We know you're #blessed
Multiple social media shout outs to your parents are a bit excessive
5. We know you miss it soOoOo much
We don't want to hear about it every time you encounter something different in the States
6. We are happy for you. Stop talking about it though
Tell us every now and again but don't overdo it
7. Embrace the friends you left here
We love you before and after abroad. Continue to love us when you're back
Think of talking about studying abroad as your friend who always talks about her boyfriend. Yeah, you love knowing that she is happy and want to hear from time to time. However, when she only talks about her boyfriend, hanging out with her becomes a drag. Coming back from abroad, just like going abroad, is a transition into a different culture once again. It is another culture shock because you are so used to living a different way. Whether it is being mindful of your frequency of speech or being mindful of how you talk about your new friends you’ve met, don’t forget to be respectful to your friends you left at home.
