“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the Fall.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald
We all have heard the phrase “winter blues”. However, your “winter blues” may actually be winter blues if you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It’s easy to find it getting harder to go to class, skipping lunch seems to be happening more and more, or you realize your motivation is falling faster than the leaves fall from the trees. If you’ve already suffered from SAD in the past, or Major Depressive Disorder like me, you can sense the shortening of days the moment your eyes open in the morning. And we know exactly what to do to combat the impending darkness.
1. Make yourself a morning promise
If you’re having trouble just getting out of bed, make a compromise. My favorite is treating myself to a venti chai tea latte from Starbucks if I get out of bed on time. Smoothies from your favorite smoothie place can also be very tempting motivators.
2. Treat yo’ self
Yes, really. Go get a manicure or pedicure. Splurge on the new seasonal drinks twice a day. And yes, you really do need that new sweater. Obviously, this needs to be done in moderation, or else you may extend your depression into your bank account.3. Take a day to do something you love
I’ve found that some college students think that missing class is the end of the world. Surprise: it isn’t. If you don’t have time on the weekends, take a personal day to just stay home and read a book. Or go see that movie you haven’t had a chance to see. Maybe spend all day playing "Overwatch" to get the new special event skins (but don’t be too disappointed when it’s your 7th loot box and you still don’t have the skin you want).
4. Spend time with friends
It’s easy to get caught up in school and forget about your social life. Plan a lunch date, or if it’s test week, even studying with someone can make things easier. Sometimes visiting friends that don’t live where I do is all I need for a pick me up. Those cinnamon rolls from that bakery on the way out of town may or may not have something to do with it.
5. Try a new hobby
That flier for that painting class next week isn’t gonna go there itself. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Even if it doesn’t work out, it got you out of the house and now you can say you’ve done it!
6. Dance 'til you're dead
No really, get that body moving! If you don’t live somewhere with walking trails, parks, or hiking opportunities, or it’s too cold to go outside, have an indoor dance party! I want to sit on that couch under the blanket binging "Stranger Things" as much as the next person, but I know that the more I force myself to move, the better. Nothing gets me more fired up than some "Just Dance" on the Wii.Keep in mind that everyone has different ways of coping, so some of these may not work for you. Just remember that each season has a purpose, and while it’s tiring to go through these changes at the end of each year, the trees can show us how lovely it is to let things go.
