When I was a senior in high school, I was so excited to go to college and get away from everyone at my high school except my best friends. I wanted to attend a college in a different state, that’s how bad I wanted to leave my town. It wasn’t the town or anyone specific that made me want to leave, I just wanted a fresh start. I wanted to meet new people instead of seeing and going to class with the same people every day since kindergarten.
After applying to the schools that I wanted to attend, I was curious about where everyone else wanted to go. I was especially curious if anyone in my class was going to go to the same college as me. I applied to schools in at least four different states, and I applied to three schools that were about two hours away from my house. I applied to all of the schools that I wanted to go to so quickly that I never thought about the pros and cons. I didn’t think about any of the factors that came with attending a school far away from home.
It may not seem important, but doctors appointments would be so complicated to schedule all at one time especially when you have a certain amount of time until you head back to school. It is just more convenient to be able to go to the doctors sooner because you are able to be on their time schedule. Another example of why going to college close to home is better is because it is cheaper. If you went to a school where you had to fly back and forth all the time then it would be expensive to come home often. When you go to college close to home, there are bound to be other students there that are from your hometown, so you always have a connection to carpool with people. This also means that if you’re feeling homesick that you can always hang out with people that went to your town or high school to feel somewhat at home. Some people even become better friends with people from their high school when they go to the same college. It is also nice because when your best friends go to a different college and they have a different break than you do, then you can make the quick trip home and spend time with them.
Overall going to college close to home was the best decision for me and seniors who are applying to college should really research the distance factor more.
