Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life.
It's an age-old adage, a cliche we've all heard. I know that I used to roll my eyes hearing this. All through high school I was never really a fan of school, so thinking about having to translate that negativity into a work environment for the majority of my adult life brought about a form of existential dread.
But then, I got to college and I started getting involved in things that make me stir.
For the first time, I sit in class and understand what it means to have a passion. I've always loved writing, but I never really understood how to turn that into a career. I'm not the best at writing fiction, I love talking to people, and I am one of the most nosey people I know.
Hello, journalism. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you.
I work for two separate publications now and in the past I've worked for a third one. Getting to sit in an actual publication's office and write is one of the most exciting things. My heart flutters every time I think about coming into work. I love talking to people, I love writing about it, and I'm a complete nerd for copy editing. I've found what makes me stir, and it's the most exciting thing.
This article is more of a blog post, but nonetheless, it's technically a form of journalism. Any medium with which I can write is ideal.
I'm just so excited to find my environment. I no longer roll my eyes when I hear about never working a day in my life because I finally understand what it means. I'm already doing what I love, and I can't wait to do more of it.
And just as a PSA: Just because newspapers are going by the wayside doesn't mean journalism is going along with them. There will always be a need for gathering, assessing, and verifying information. Stories are meant to be shared. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure that happens.
