College Students: We Just Shut Up and Listen

“Go to class, make your bed, brush your teeth, fold your clothes, get good grades, be home by 11 p.m., go pick up your brother or sister, do the dishes, do your homework.” These are all things we've been told to do at one point in our lives and at this point, we're so accustomed to doing these things we don't even question it. Why have we been following orders are whole lives? Who said that following what people tell us to do would make us succeed or get anywhere in life?

All we've ever been doing our whole lives is taking orders from everyone around us. When was the last time you did something because you wanted to do it and not because someone told you, you have to? If you're still thinking, it's probably been a long time. The people that are most affected by this are college kids. These are the prime years where we where we either break or make ourselves. We're told we need to start looking out for our futures, we need to get a job to pay off our student loans, we need to pick a major; a career that will make us successful later on in our lives. OUR LIVES. Sometimes I don't think people fully understand those two words.

All our lives we've been told we're going to go to college for the sole purpose of finding a career that make us happy; a job that we don't mind doing the work for because we get such a joy out of doing it. We shouldn't be told to enjoy something. We should actually enjoy doing it. That's the problem with us college students though, we're already too brainwashed to ever stand up and say “No. This is what I want to do, and I'm sure as hell going to do it.” I'm here to tell you that it's time we start living for what we want, and not for what other people tell us we want. It's time we take control of our lives, our needs, and our wants.

Now is our time to start figuring out what we want to do in life, what kind of job we want to have when we're 30-years-old and are married and have three kids; we're figuring out who we are and what purpose we serve in this world. We're a generation of driven extroverts; we don't want to be stuck in a confined seat in some old classroom, with an old whiteboard, with old methods. We want to be out there in the world exploring all of these brand new things that are staring us right in the face. And, you can bet that we're sure as hell going to do it on our time, and how we want it done.

We're done taking orders. We're done with being told what to do. We're done being followers. We were born to lead our own lives, not to be told how to lead them. We're done being somebody you want us to be; it's time we become somebody we want to be. It's time YOU start being your own kind of you.

It's 2015 people, wake up and smell the future! Go ahead, it's right in front of you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
