Why College Students Should Knit

It's not just for the elderly!

Maybe you think knitting is the recreation of old women.Or just for “girls”.

But these ideas that knitting is merely for the elderly or the female is merely a cultural stigma.Other than that older women commonly knit or that woman traditionally have knit more than men, there is no reason why all millennials should not knit!

On the contrary, knitting is actually the perfect pastime for college students. For one thing, it’s fairly easy.Unlike crochet which boasts a myriad of different stitches, knitting consists mainly of two very, very, simple stitches: knitting and purling. With variations on these two simple stitches, a plethora of creative projects can be created.

Secondly, there are so many amazing knitting patterns available! On a basic level, a nearly indefinite variation of scarves, hats, slippers, vests, purses, blankets and (my personal favorite) shawls can be created. If the clothing lover within you is not intrigued by the galaxy of possibility maybe the geek in you is.There are numerous movie/comic book/literary themed knitting projects available. Who wouldn’t want a hand knit replica of Katniss’s iconic half sweater? Or a homemade Hogwarts House scarf? (Or a sweater, if you want to get adventurous).

Handmade knitted items also make wonderful gifts. Nothing says “I care” like something handmade.Sure, you could buy your best friend a scarf, even a handmade one. But when you give a loved one something you created, it’s like each stitch says “I love you”.

Knitting is also extraordinarily healthy. A less commonly known benefit of knitting is that “some people find that craft work helps them control their weight” by helping them avoid “mindless” eating. It reportedly helps lower blood pressure as well as acting as an overall stress reliever. For college students who often experience high stress levels, knitting is an ideal hobby. I even have seen students bring a knitting project to work on during a class lecture!

In terms of brain activity, watching television is extremely passive. It is a “drug” for the mind. But yes, television is awesome.Whether it’s watching football or favorite movies like “Mrs. Doubtfire”, watching television helps me, as a college student, relax.Knitting helps make watching television a more active form of recreation. I’m still relaxed but my mind and figures are consumed with creating something beautiful. There’s nothing like watching "Harry Potter" while knitting a Slytherin scarf for the Draco Malfoy in your life!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
