College Students' Love/Hate Relationship With Summer

The bittersweet end to the school year.

Having a home away from home at college makes anticipating summer a lot more difficult that it ever was when we were in high school. While summer is something that is always eagerly anticipated, college students often tend to have a more love/hate relationship with the season.

LOVE: Classes are over.

It’s finally time to return the textbooks, throw out our doodled on notebooks and look forward to having a clean slate starting next semester. Finishing up a semesters worth of classes is one of the greatest feelings meaning no more homework, tests, or papers.

HATE: Classes are over.

Don’t get me wrong, no more class is definitely more of a love than a hate. However, once you find yourself about a month into summer, working day after day, it’s often common to find yourself missing the routine that having classes scheduled puts you in.

LOVE: Spending time with family and old friends.

Being away at school often has us missing our family and friends from back home. Being home for the summer allows for plenty of time to catch up and spend quality time with those who you miss while away at school.

HATE: Missing our friends from school.

Going home for the summer is great and all, but it also means that we are no longer able to hang out with our friends from school as much as we’re used to. Having most of your friends from school live in different states than you is definitely one of the struggles of summer.

LOVE: Minimal responsibilities.

With the school year ending, our list of responsibilities gets smaller. While many of us will have summer jobs, we also no longer have to worry about checking a syllabus or staying up until 5 am to finish a paper sure is relieving.

HATE: Having nothing to do.

With minimal responsibilities often comes being bored. In the summer, you suddenly have a lot more free time on your hands than you did while you were at school. Doing a whole lot of nothing gets old real fast in the summer.

LOVE: Home-cooked meals.

There is nothing better than coming home for the summer knowing you will finally get a much needed break from campus food. Having home cooked meals is one of the greatest perks of summer.

HATE: Easy access to food any time of day.

While many of us would prefer home cooked meals over campus food any day, we can’t deny how much we’ll miss the leisure that comes with swiping for our food any time of day.

LOVE: Home.

Summer means that it’s time to go back to where we came from. It’s time to go back home, sleep in our own rooms, eat at the dinner table, watch TV on the couch, and remember why we love home so much.

HATE: Missing our home away from home.

College quickly our second home that we know and love just as much as our actual homes. Missing our home away from home over the summer never gets easier.

With summer right around the corner, it may seem like a win/lose that while it is finally time to go home, we are also leaving behind our school and all that we love about it. But, no need to be alarmed – in just a few short months, we will be back at school, reminiscing on summer, thinking about all of the reasons why we have a love/hate relationship with college.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
