Have you ever compared your office job to being like a prison? If you have, you've probably been given strange looks until you start to make some great comparisons, then a lot of people begin to agree with you. One random comparison I've made that I found to be true when taking a closer look is that college students are basically 1940s screenwriters. What the hell do I mean by this? Well, let's take a look!
While taking the class, world cinema movements, I learned that back in the day, Hollywood screenwriters were committed to writing scripts for only one studio. Sound familiar? Well, as college students, we had to commit to one school by signing an agreement and informing the college that we would be enrolling. These screenwriters had to live in dorms on studio property and basically spent all of their time writing a ton of scripts that would slowly, but surely, get reviewed by their superiors. If you are a resident, you're living in dorms, too, on your campus or "studio," churning out paper after paper for your professor who will take their sweet time grading them. As expected, Hollywood producers and directors can be unreasonable when it comes to the demands they make and are sometimes a little weird in nature. This is no exception for professors. Our professors make ridiculous demands and can be pretty quirky too!
What really sucked is the fact that these big bosses basically owned their writers. If they didn't write fantastic scripts, they wouldn't get any money and would be fired. It didn't matter that the screenwriters had other priorities or a ton of other things to keep track of, if they messed up, their career was screwed. Similarly, our professors own us in that if we don't do all of our assignments and papers correctly, we'll receive a bad grade and may fail the class which can mess up our career plans. Most of our professors don't care if we have three other assignments due or a social life; what matters is their class.
Old school screenwriters were also expected to support the studio they worked for, which makes sense and is a nice thing to do, but does sort of come off as territorial if you don't acknowledge the accomplishments of a rival studio. Are you gonna tell me you only like Warner Bros. movies that and all other movie companies make shitty movies? Of course not! This is kind of like when we support our school teams. Obviously it makes sense and shows that we have pride, but we should acknowledge and respect the other team or "rival studio" too. If my hometown college, the College of Staten Island (CSI), played against Ramapo, I would hope that both teams do well and I wouldn't ignore CSI if they won or try to devalue their accomplishment in any way.
Is this comparison a little bit of a stretch? Yeah, but think about it! They had to live in dorms on a closed off campus-like place writing constantly for demanding superiors! Thats totally college life! We're 1940s screenwriters, guys. Give yourselves a hand.
