We all enjoy having a break from school and going home for the holidays. However, we also dread the questions we know are coming every single time. Whether that's because we don't have the answer or we just don't care to answer, they happen and we will never be able to avoid them. They stay consistent, and the worst part is that we can't complain because most of our aunts/uncles/grandparents/cousins actually care about the answer. Every holiday, family party or just a visit home will lead to this.
"So how is school going?"
First of all, we are on a break from school. We know this question is going to come up at some point, but if you could wait to ask it when multiple people are around it would make our lives a lot easier. No one usually likes talking about work outside of work, so we don't like talking about school that much when we're outside of school.
"Are you getting good grades?"
We understand that you're only asking because you care, but you might not get the answer you're hoping for... and we don't want to disappoint you (whoops).
"Are you seeing anyone? Anyone special in your life?!"
Bottom line: We will tell you if we are dating someone. We appreciate that you care about our love-life, but please do not remind us how single we are.
"So what's the plan after you graduate?"
To be completely honest, we usually have no idea. That's why we're in school, so we can try to figure that part out. A better question would be "Are you excited to graduate?" or something along those lines, but not asking us what's going to happen beyond that. We're more concerned about passing all the classes we need to that semester. Once we graduate, then you can ask. We're probably just hoping we make it to graduation with minimal mental breakdowns. So we'll probably just find a way to dramatically change the subject.
"Are you working while going to school?"
We most likely are, and we definitely don't want to talk about it. Working and going to college full-time can become extremely stressful. Finding a work and school balance is hard, so we don't like to think about it.
Although we love our family, and seeing them every now and then, we might as well just wear shirts around with all of these answers. Unfortunately, I doubt these question will end but maybe wearing your answers on your shirt will save you from the confrontation.
