College Spring Break... With My Mom

The typical spring break just wasn't for me.

College Spring Break... With My Mom

Spring Break. College students plan this trip month in advance. It’s what we save up all of our money for and it’s the highlight of many student’s college experience. For me, it’s different. I didn’t want to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars that I didn’t have on something that I know my family ultimately wouldn’t approve of.

In high school, I never had the opportunity to go somewhere during spring break due to my commitment to cheerleading. This year was the first time I could and I chose instead to take a trip with my mom. I love my family more than anything and being apart from not only her, but the rest of them as well, has been a very hard aspect of going away to college. Having the opportunity to make these memories with my mom is something that not everyone gets a chance to do and I am so blessed in that.

My mom and I chose to travel to New York City thinking that it would be spring time and nice outside. It wasn’t. When we arrived, it was maybe 30 degrees and we eventually dealt with Snow Storm Stella. Yeah… that was fun.

Going to New York has been a dream for mine almost my whole life. I went in high school for a field trip but you can hardly experience everything in just three days. This time, we got to do things that we never had the opportunity to before.

From the statue of liberty…

To a show on Broadway.

This vacation was one for the books. And the best part was that I got to go with my best friend. I use that term a lot when it comes to my family and I don’t see anything wrong with it. I am extremely close to my parents and my grandmother and I love it.

We had so much fun doing what we wanted to do. My mom let me plan most if not all of the trip and we made it worth our while. We were non-stop the entire time exploring as much of the city as we could. Seeing things that not only us but our friends and family have dreamed to see and experience was truly amazing. One thing that everyone enjoyed back home was when we live streamed on social media. It was fun to share our memories with the people who cared about us.

All in all, this trip is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I’ll look back at the memories we made and cherish them forever. I have never laughed so much or had nearly as much fun as I did with my mom this past week. If going to the beach with friends is your thing, then this is mine.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
