When we were younger, all we ever looked forward to was summertime. Like most people, I'm a huge fan of the nice weather, tan lines and having a few months of pure fun (especially since my birthday is in July). However, about the time we get to college, the summer begins to change for us. The time that used to be considered a break suddenly is busier and involves more work than the school year.
Bonfires, one of my favorite parts of the summer, become a constant struggle to plan. Between everyone's work schedules, it becomes impossible to get all of your hometown friends together on one night. In fact, you're lucky if anyone can come at all. Because let's face it, what are the chances you have the same nights off?
Speaking of work, did I mention it's all you do? There is nothing more painful than standing at a register in a clothing store or serving tables at a restaurant looking out the window just to watch the beautiful day. I would take sitting outside in the quad doing homework over staring outside any day. Do you think they could have some kind of sunroof that would let me get tan while I work?
You would think all this work means when you do get a day off you can do whatever you want. In the strange event that all your friends manage to line up a day to do something, it doesn't matter because somehow you're all still broke. That thing called college tuition happens to be hanging over your head. At least during the school year, you have the peace of knowing it was just paid.
More than likely, when you're at school, you are at least doing work that you enjoy. Summer jobs are hit or miss. Even if your job isn't too bad, it may not be as interesting to you as what you actually learn in college. Yes I admitted it, having a major you love can make school fun!
Of course, one of the saddest parts about summer is not living with or even seeing your roomie! Sure, around your work schedules, you can try to line up road trips to visit, but nothing beats a late night walk to get a smoothie before binge-watching some Netflix together. You even miss daily conversation you would normally have between classes and homework assignments throughout each day.
Don't forget about all the rest of your college friends too! Four months without all of the crazy shenanigans can make the summer seem pretty dull. Friday and Saturday nights miss a little spark compared to the fun you all have during the school year. Whether it is ordering pizza and staying in or shoving as many people as possible into a car or cab to go out, it's just not the same without them.
However, don't worry too much! Because it won't be long before you're back on campus enjoying every wonderful part of college.
And then you will be missing Summer ...
