On a college campus, you have your friends, you professors, your classmates and your acquaintances. While these people are a vital part of your college experience, none of them will have nearly the same impact as your relationship with your roommate. Sometimes, people don't get along with their roommates, especially their first year, and that's OK! But that doesn't mean you won't find a roommate that will become your best friend. My roommate and I had a bad roommate experience freshman year, but I think I can speak for both of us when I say I am thankful for the bad relationship because it led me to an amazing friend my sophomore year. So it's time for me to thank my roommate for all that she has done for me this year.
Thanks for never letting me do things alone.
Whether it's going to get food, or grabbing a package from the post office, late night dance parties or sing-a-longs, you're always down to take a walk with me somewhere if you're not busy. I'm so glad that you minimize the times that I have to walk alone because walking with friends is always much more fun.
Thanks for never letting me starve.
When the cafeteria is closed or I don't feel like walking across campus for food, you always are prepared with ramen and allow me to take food whenever I want. You actually encourage me to eat late at night when I'm hungry but I know it's a bad idea. So thanks for always influencing me to make unhealthy decisions! Thank goodness you are prepared. Without you, I wouldn't have access to late-night snacks and utensils!
Thanks for always knowing when something is wrong and trying your best to fix it.
You can easily walk into our room, and within five minutes, you know my mood. You know when I'm not myself and never hesitate to ask me what's wrong. You are always here for me whether it's academics, drama or personal stuff from home. It's obvious that you truly care about me and would do anything for me to cheer me up, and obviously, I would do the same.
Thank you for always offering me your clothes.
Wow, I cannot count the number of times I've had an interview, a party or any other occasion where I could not find something to wear, and you offered me your closet every single time. Whether it's lending me cute flip flops so that I don't ruin mine, a cute dress or dance clothes, you never hesitate to insist I look at your wardrobe. Thanks for always listening to my rants, even when I go on and on.
College is stressful, and you are always the first person I see that knows everything going on in my life. You could be doing homework, studying for a test or coloring, but the moment I walk in the door, you automatically drop what you're doing to ask how my day was. Sometimes, it's as simple as telling you that I got an A on my Spanish test that I was nervous about. Other times, I rant about a professor that made a rude comment, a girl spreading rumors or anything else that annoys me throughout the day. Sometimes, I rant so long that I'm just getting everything out of my head and you don't even need to say a word and just nod your head. But then there are times that I'm so upset about something and you are always able to give me some advice. Thank you for dealing with my rants. I wouldn't be as mentally sane without our rant sessions.
Thanks for never complaining about my five alarms that go off in the morning.
This is always a great conversation starter. How many times did I oversleep this semester? How do I oversleep when I set so many alarms? Why do I turn off my alarms instead of snoozing them? I don't know how you manage to tune them out every morning. Maybe because I am so quick to turn them off, or because most times you wake up and leave the room for class before I do. Thank you for always turning it into a joke. I am glad someone is able to tolerate it because without them, I would be oversleeping a lot more.
Thanks for taking care of me.
Most people can't stand to be around someone who isn't feeling well because the atmosphere is just miserable. Thank you for always being there to take care of me and my well-being. Thank you for talking me through throwing up because you know I hate it and giving me water or giving me a heating pad when my stomach feels terrible. You are the real MVP!
Thanks for always being down for a quick road trip
There is nothing more convenient than your roommate having a car when you do not. But it is nothing to take advantage of. So thank you for occasionally helping me run my urgent errands. Our trips to Michaels, Party City, Five Below, the Dollar Store and of course, food, are always a good time and these trips always lead to great stories. Also, thank you for never killing me in the process. Your road rage will always be a topic of interest.
Thank you for always supporting me in anything I do.
Your support goes a long way. You celebrate with me when I get a good grade, and you feel my pain when I didn't do as well as I had hoped. You support me in all of the crazy things I do on campus because let's be real, I'm super involved which leads me to be super busy. You motivate me to do things that I need to get done that I don't feel like doing at times. You are always willing to try to work around my schedule so that we can hangout and grab dinner and whatever else we want to do. You know all about my personal and home life and are always there to rise me up and catch me when I fall. Your support means the world to me.
If you can look through these examples and find common denominators between you and your roommates, then you are very lucky. Not everyone has great roommate experiences, but I am very happy that I ended up where I did. As far as my roommate and I, each of these examples go both ways. There is not a thing that I wouldn't do for her. If she has a mental breakdown, I'm there. If she wants to go on a day trip, I'm down. If she's struggling in class, I'll try my best to help her study. This is what true roommates, and most importantly, best friends, do for each other.
I am about to move out for the summer. But I just want to thank you for everything that you've done for me, and for teaching me what it's like to have a best friend as a roommate. I'm going to miss living with you and seeing you every morning, afternoon and night. But this is not the end. We will hangout over the summer. We will have plenty of dinner dates next year. We will be best friends forever! I can't wait to see how our friendship grows. Without you, my college experience wouldn't be half of what it is today.
