The radio. The first form of mass communication. The source of entertainment and information that many say will never die. It fuels car rides, commutes, bars, restaurants and malls a like. There’s only one thing better than radio itself, and that is the college stations that fill its airways. The opportunities these stations offer are endless. Not only does it let students connect to their local community, it lets them express themselves and voice their opinions in ways very few get to do. Allowing students of all majors and backgrounds access to share their voices and music with the masses is empowering.
And every November 4th campuses all over the country celebrate their stations, students and all their success in form of National college radio day. Very few station on today’s campus are completely student-run, and it's only fitting that those fulltime students who dedicated their time to produce amazing stations be recognized. Running a station requires a lot from everyone involved. It takes a university willing to fund the operation, administrators willing to help run the technical aspects, and student leaders who give up an endless number of hours to organize and schedule out the other student DJ’s who make room in their busy schedules to conduct some amazing shows!
So, even though this November fourth has past, take a minute to tune into your local college run radio station (the local one for the Susquehanna Community is FM 88.9 The Pulse) because a lot more goes into producing the shows you love (or may come to love) than you think.
