The College Process As Told By The Gilmore Girls

The process lasts almost as long as "Gilmore Girls" does.

It is the longest process. I swear it goes on forever. Applying to college has been in the works since before I even knew what I was looking for in a school. It starts Sophmore year when you pick classes for Junior year. You have to be sure to take all the best classes and make the best grades you can because that's what colleges will focus on. The crazy thing is it doesn't end until December/May of your Senior year. Applying to college is the longest process, and the Gilmore Girls explain how I feel about it perfectly.

Step One: Testing.

We may have all judged Rory when she would skip out on things to study, but during SAT/ACT season, we all had to skip out on things. At least once during our Junior year, we could be found in some room at the high school doing test prep work, looking down at the math problem like it was a dragon that had just flown down the hallway.

Stage Two: Picking Colleges

Unlike most of us, Rory knew from Season One that she wanted to go to Harvard... but wait, those aren't Harvard signs in the back, are they? Exactly, even a girl as put together as Rory can't decide where she wants to go to school, so how am I?

Stage Three: Application Panic

We have all been there. Whether it's over finishing an essay or hitting submit on the actual application the night before it's due, the panic has bit us hard. The questions can linger for weeks on end. Did my teachers send their recommendation letters? Did my application go through? Did my transcript get sent? All these questions reek havoc in our brains and cause panic when it usually isn't necessary.

Stage Four: Waiting

There is nothing worse than waiting. I mean, how can they expect me to wait two months for them to make a decision on my future? So maybe they have a lot of applications to read, but don't they know who I am? It may not be stated in my application (cause it would definitely make me look bad), but I am not a patient person.

Stage Five: The Decision

Now that you are wanted at so many places, it's about making a decision. It's shocking to think that you are making such a huge decision about your future, but it's even more shocking (and amazing) that you even have a choice. Congratulations, you've impressed people and they want you at their school. This process has all been worth it. Now it's time to have an amazing time at the school of your dreams.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
