Applying to college is stressful enough, and if you're like me, having no idea what you want to do with your future doesn't make it any easier! I went in to college as a Communications Interest major with the hopes that I would love it and that it would lead me into a successful path for my future. At my school, the COMMI major is one of the only majors that you need to actually get in to. Meaning, you take four classes and they pick students for the major based on their grades in those classes. Being a clueless and unmotivated freshman, I did not try as hard as I should have in those first two classes and well, I am currently facing those consequences as a first semester sophomore.
Basically, my advisor told me that I did not have a very high chance of getting in to my desired major. Hearing that as a sophomore really, really scared me. It led me to think to myself things like, "What the heck am I going to do now?" or "I have no idea what else I can do" and even, jokingly, "What was the point of all of this, I guess it's time to drop out! " (my parents weren't thrilled to hear that one). I began to feel lost, overwhelmed and felt that I had ruined my future. Well, after days of research and a whole lot of over thinking, I am here to tell you that if something like this happens to you, it is going to be okay.
I began to think more positively, and realized that I wasn't even sure if I wanted to study Communications. I told myself that this could be my chance to try to find what I'm really passionate about. Honestly, your major is not something that determines your future forever. It is not something that defines you, or something that companies specifically hire you for. If you pursue a major in environmental sciences, you can still get jobs that are in a completely different field from that major! What is important are the activities you do outside of school, the clubs you are in, the minors that are there to emphasize your skills and interests, etc. All of these things are there to show who you really are. If you know what you want to do in the future, have a set plan and have the perfect major, that is awesome! However, if you have no idea what you want to do and feel like you can't find the "perfect" major for you, that's also perfectly okay!
College is about trying to find yourself by opening you up to new opportunities and experiences. If you go into college undecided, are unhappy with your major, or are not able to get into a major you wanted, don't be discouraged. I know it can be stressful, but open yourself up to things you are passionate about, do not just solely think about what is best for your future. Join clubs you are interested in, take new classes that you think you wouldn't enjoy. You can never know what you're truly interested in unless you explore and try new things!
My parents helped me look at things a different way when I was feeling lost. My dad told me he wanted to be a doctor for years, he was in the major and everything. Came his Junior year of college, he had to take Organic Chemistry and right then and there, he changed his major to business and is now successful in that field! The point is, there is no rush and never a wrong time to change your course in life. Everything happens for a reason. Super cliche, I know, but it's true! And sometimes bad situations can actually be good for you, they are there to teach you lessons and help you grow.
If you spend all of your time stressing over a major and your future, you will miss out on the important parts of life. Enjoy your time at school and expand your horizons. Everything great takes time, so just know that you will eventually get to where you are supposed to be.
