After being cyber-schooled for nine years, the shift to college can be quite the change to say the least. Some of my friends have even nicknamed me “sheltered” or make jokes like, “it's a homeschooler thing”. (It's all in good fun of course). There is some accuracy to the jokes though, because there are certain truths that only former homeschoolers can relate to.
One class feels like an eternity because you’re used to working on your own schedule. Although I attended live classes online, for the most part my work was done on my own time, which makes college classes extremely tedious.
Sitting at a desk for an entire class period is the only thing more torturous than the length of the class. It's also no longer acceptable to lay out on your floor with all your work which only intensifies the never ending class period.
Completing homework is sometimes easier for you than it is for your friends. Homeschooling requires taking the initiative to finish lessons on your own and that has carried over to your college life as well.
Sick days are a new experience. When work is done on your own time or you attend online classes, there aren’t really any good reasons to take sick days. I can remember one time in middle school having the flu and still going to my online English class. Now, being sick and going to class doesn’t work out that well.
Your college friends sometimes think you’re “sheltered,” but really you’ve just learned not to follow the crowd. It’s easier to form your own ideas and opinions about things like pop culture and beliefs when you didn’t grow up surrounded by the pressure to follow the norm.
And finally, you’ve had to adapt to not going to class in pajamas. But of course you could always invest in these "Suitjamas."
