Why College Isn't So Bad After All

These four years can actually be some of the best of your life.

I often hear people say how college will never be the best years of their life. College can be tough with everything students are responsible for: schoolwork on top of a social life, extra-curricular activities, home life, work, etc. There’s no denying we have a lot on our plate. Although I don’t necessarily believe college has to be the best years of our lives, I certainly think those four years offer some great experiences.

1. Everlasting Friendships.
As cheesy as it sounds, you really do meet some of your absolute best friends during your college years. Being away from your home friends and family, you’re around your college friends every day. Whether it’s your roommate, partner from a group project, teammate or sorority sister... you’re bound to develop a close bound with someone. Friends like these help make the struggles of being a college student a little more bearable.

2. Freedom.
Going away to college comes along with gaining independence. You no longer have your mother there to cook you dinner or tell you what time you have to be home that night. Every decision is made by you. Although it may seem scary at first, college grants you some experiences we all need in the real world. It’s important to step out of your comfort zone and figure things out for yourself.

3. Learning Opportunities.
Okay, so I get that attending class every day is not the most exciting part about college. Still, sometimes you get lucky with the classes you take. Every once in a while, you’ll get a professor who’s engaged with his students and genuinely cares about teaching. Even though this isn’t always the case... it’s worth it when you’re actually looking forward to that one class. College opens the door to meeting people in the professional world, fellow students from around the world and even offers the chance to go abroad and get receive the ultimate learning experience.

4. Grow as a person.
College offers the opportunity to develop yourself as an individual. You’re faced with many new experiences and you really get to “find yourself.” College is one of the first times you have the chance to explore and find out what you like. Since college life is such a big change, we’re likely to make many mistakes. All of these mistakes and obstacles we go through in college help mold us into the person we become.

College helps teach important life-skills and creates great memories. So next time you’re considering dropping out of college and joining a circus, just think that one day you’ll look back on those four years and think “well... that wasn’t so bad after all.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
